Newton Police Department

Alexis M. Straight, 26, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft and Nicholas J. Sedlacek, 27, of Newton, was charged with two counts of fifth-degree theft and possession of contraband in a correctional institute at 12:44 p.m. May 31 after police were called to two locations for theft. Police were called to Walmart at 12:15 a.m. May 27 where there were allegedly two shoplifters. Officers were unable to find the male and female shoplifters. Police were given photos of the two suspects who were seen leaving the store without paying for an air mattress. The mattress was valued at $139. Police were called at 12:18 p.m. May 31 in reference to a theft at Dollar General. An employee saw Sedlacek take wine from the store without paying. Sedlacek was later apprehended by officers. Sedlacek was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail. While at the jail 0.5 grams of marijuana was found in Sedlacek's jeans. Straight was arrested at 12:16 a.m. June 1 on a warrant.

Natalie J. Purdy, 18, of Marshalltown, was arrested at 10:52 p.m. June 1 in the 900 block of North Eighth Avenue East on an Altoona Police Department warrant for failure to appear on a fifth-degree theft charge. Purdy was turned over to Altoona police.
