Colfax-Mingo sweeps Montezuma

COLFAX — The Colfax-Mingo baseball team played two different games in a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader against Montezuma on Wednesday. The Tigerhawks still found a way to stay undefeated though.

The Tigerhawks got strong starting pitching from freshman Trystin Ross and junior Jonathan Jacobs during 14-1 and 3-2 home victories.

In the opener, which lasted only five innings, Ross allowed one hit and one unearned run in five innings. He struck out seven. Ross is now 3-0 on the season and he has yet to allow an earned run.

At the plate, senior Adam Teed went 3-for-3 with three runs and two stole bases. Junior Alex Lewis finished 2-for-2 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI and Jacobs was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. One of Jacobs’ hits was a double.

Jacobs started and earned his first win of the season on the mound after allowing no earned runs and striking out nine in the first six innings of the nightcap. Lewis struck out the only batter he faced in the seventh to pick up his second save.

Junior Misha Seebeck got the first two outs in the seventh but allowed a hit. He also had one of the Tigerhawks’ three hits at the plate and scored a run.

Sophomore Zarek Hill was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI, freshman Brady Berkey walked twice and junior Jarod Nichols and freshman Trinity Schroeder both walked and scored a run. Teed walked and had an RBI.

The Tigerhawks walked eight times in the game.

Montezuma (0-6, 0-5) took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Colfax-Mingo rallied with two runs in the fifth.

Colfax-Mingo plays North Mahaska at 6 p.m. Friday in New Sharon.

SOFTBALL

Colfax-Mingo 3, Montezuma 1

MONTEZUMA — Colfax-Mingo senior Amy Russell struck out 11 in the circle and sophomore Mackensie Brown drove in two runs at the plate during the Class 1A No. 6 Tigerhawk softball team’s 3-1 victory over Montezuma during South Iowa Cedar League play Wednesday.

Russell surrendered just four hits and walked none and the only run Montezuma scored was unearned. Russell, now 3-0 on the season, has 33 strikeouts and seven walks on the season.

The Tigerhawks scored all three of their runs in the second inning.

Junior Ries Wilson led off the inning with a triple to right field and then scored on an error by the Braves.

Colfax-Mingo (5-1 overall, 3-1 in SICL play) made it 3-0 when Brown hit a two-run single to center field. The hit drove in sophomores Braedynn Rawlins and Delaney Underwood, who both reached base with singles. The fifth and final hit for the Tigerhawks came from Russell, who came into the game with a team-best batting average of .471.

Montezuma (3-5, 1-3) scored its lone run in the fourth inning.

Colfax-Mingo plays a doubleheader at 6 p.m. Thursday in Newton.
