Drawing a walk helped both teams score their first run of the game on Tuesday night at Newton’s Berg Middle School Softball Field.

“We started slow, but as the innings went by, we starting putting runs on the board,” Newton softball head coach Kristina McNew said after the Newton High Cardinals rolled up a 8-1 win over visiting Marshalltown.

The Bobcats used a walk, a stolen base and a wild pitch to put a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning. A groundout drove in the run.

Newton’s Audrey Lucas worked a base-on-balls in the bottom of the second and stole second base. Kennedy Leiker hit a bloop single into right field to put runners on the corners. Leiker was thrown out trying to steal second base.

Harlie Durr’s fly ball dropped in for a single to send Lucas to home plate for the tying run. Newton starting pitcher Anna Coyle drew a walk and Karley Leiker’s single brought in another run.

That was enough for Anna Coyle, who threw a two-hitter for her first win of the season. She issued four walks and struck out six.

Newton built on its lead in the third inning with all the scoring coming after two were gone in the frame. Karley Leiker reached on an error then Bailey Davis and Emily Valtman drew walks to load the bases. Rilee Slycord delivered a three-run double.

In the sixth inning, the Cardinals plated three more runs. Karley Leiker singled followed by Davis reaching on a Bobcat error. Valtman walked again.

Slycord came to the plate with the bases loaded again. She had an RBI sacrifice fly. Taylor Ryan’s double chased home the other two runs.

Kennedy Leiker led the offensive fireworks with two singles and a double for Newton. Ryan had a single and a double and Karley Leiker hit two singles. Slycord doubled. Davis and Durr each hit a single.

Newton’s junior varsity beat Marshalltown, 9-0.

Newton (2-0) plays a 6 p.m. varsity game on Friday at Ames. The freshman game is at 4:30 p.m. and the junior varsity game is at 7:30 p.m.
