PELLA — On to state for Newton High senior Megan Pressgrove and junior Bethany Baumgartner. The Cardinals’ top two singles players combined to claim second place in the Class 1A Region 8 tennis tournament Thursday.

The Cardinal duo clinched a 1A state tournament berth with a 6-2, 6-0 semifinal win over Oskaloosa’s Macy Scharff and Josie Bunnell. In the regional championship match, Pressgrove and Baumgartner lost 6-3, 6-2 to Pella’s Bronwyn Metcalf and Cecily Johnson.
