Cardinals shut down Mustangs

MONROE — Newton High’s Cardinals and host Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs played to a scoreless tie through the first 24 minutes of Thursday’s non-conference boys’ soccer match. After that it was all Cardinals for a 5-0 victory.

Newton freshman William Cheng used a pass from senior Justin Fischer to find the net at the 15:54 mark of the first half. It was Cheng’s first varsity goal.

Twenty seconds later, junior Brad Portner put the Cardinals up 2-0 on an unassisted goal. Fischer scored a header off a pass from sophomore Jacob Murphy at the 11:54 mark. Newton led 3-0 at halftime.

Cheng pushed the Newton advantage to 4-0 with 36:15 left in the second half. Fischer knocked in a penalty kick with 21 minutes remaining in the game to finish the scoring.

Senior Reagan Maple started in goal for Newton. Without having to make a save against a PCM attack, Maple gave way to junior Benny Cheng, who played in goal for the final 33 minutes. Benny Cheng had one save.

“It was great to get everyone in the game tonight,” Newton head coach Zach Jensen said. “It was great to see Williams Cheng get his first two varsity goals. He’s someone who continues to impress the coaching staff.”

Jensen said a win is a win, but he didn’t think his players brought the intensity they should have. He said the Cardinals didn’t play fully to their level and what they are capable of doing.

“It’s been the story of our season. We’re back on the road Saturday at Pella. We’re hoping to grab another Little Hawkeye Conference win,” Jensen said. Newton is 9-5 heading into its LHC clash with Pella’s Little Dutch at 12:30 p.m. at Pella.

PCM’s Mustangs are 3-9 and play West Central Valley at 7 p.m. on Monday in Stuart.

The Newton junior varsity beat PCM, 4-0, on Thursday. Scoring goals were Preston Sherwood, Logan Heisdorffer, Taylor Greiner and Kaleb Dydell. Jacob Knoll had two assists and Heisdorffer had one assist.
