Underwood leads C-M girls to second at SICL golf meet; L-S finishes fifth

C-M, L-S boys also compete at Oakland Acres

GRINNELL — Two all-conference golfers helped the Colfax-Mingo girls’ golf team to a runner-up finish in the South Iowa Cedar League tournament on Monday.

Sophomore Delaney Underwood claimed the runner-up medalist honor, and senior Amy Russell finished in the top 10 as the Tigerhawks shot a 413 at Oakland Acres Golf Course.

Lynnville-Sully, led by sisters Kaylee and Tessa Van Maanen, fired a 469 and finished fifth.

Iowa Valley was the team champion with a 387. Seventeen shots back of Colfax-Mingo was Sigourney (430) and the other top-five team was English Valleys (449).

After Lynnville-Sully was HLV (485), Montezuma (490) and BGM (497).

On the boys’ side, Colfax-Mingo sophomore Ahren Teed and junior Holden Jansen finished around the top 20 individually, but the Tigerhawks and Hawks were at the bottom of the team standings.

The boys’ team champion was Belle Plaine, whose team included the top two individual finishers.

Belle Plaine shot a 343, which was three shots better than runner-up English Valleys (346) and eight strokes ahead of Iowa Valley (351).

North Mahaska (354) and Keota (363) completed the top five, and Sigourney (364), BGM (365), HLV (367), Montezuma (389), Colfax-Mingo (406) and Lynnville-Sully (434) rounded out the field.

Underwood and Iowa Valley’s Caleigh Smith had another solid battle at the top of the girls’ standings.

Underwood defeated Smith a few strokes in the dual earlier this season, but Smith got a little redemption Monday.

Underwood was two shots ahead following the front nine after firing a 43, but she carded a 48 on the back nine to finish with a 91. Smith shot a 45 on the front nine but got in front and pulled away on the back nine with a 42. She won the conference title with an 87.

The other Tigerhawk to claim all-conference honors was Russell. She was sixth overall with a 100. She shot a 50 on both the front and back nines.

The other two counting scores from the Tigerhawks came from sophomore Chelsea Russell and freshman Sydni Hostetter. Chelsea Russell carded a 49 on the front nine and a 59 on the back nine for a 108. Hostetter was six shots better on the front nine (54) than she was on the back nine (60) and finished with a 114.

The Tigerhawks’ two non-counting scores came from sophomore Camilla Schlosser (126) and freshman Brielle Reed (135).

Lynnville-Sully was led by senior Kaylee Van Maanen. She bested her younger sister by one stroke. Kaylee Van Maanen shot a 54 on the front nine and a 59 on the back nine for a 113. Sophomore Tessa Van Maanen was one shot worse on the front nine and finished with a 114.

The other two counting scores came from seniors Mikayla Smith (120) and Kristin Jaenette (122), and the non-counting score of 147 was turned in by sophomore Kayla Van Dyke.

Colfax-Mingo’s girls host its annual tournament at 4 p.m. Friday.

Both Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully play in Class 1A regional first round tournaments on Monday. The Tigerhawks play in the Region 3B tournament in Marengo, and the Hawks play in the Region 3A tournament in Sigourney.

The boys individual champion was Belle Plaine’s Lance Van Nevel, who was the medalist with a 77. Teammate Chance Baburek carded an 80 for the runner-up medalist.

Teed led the Tigerhawks with an 89. He shot a 47 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine and finished in a tie for 16th overall.

The rest of the Colfax-Mingo counting scores came from freshman Brady Berkey (98), sophomore Skyler Aikin (109) and junior Wyatt Smith (110).

Berkey shot a 43 on the back nine after carding a 55 on the front.

Jansen led Lynnville-Sully with a 92, which was just outside the top 20. He carded a 48 on the front nine and 44 on the back nine.

Senior Isaac Collins had the Hawks’ second-best score with a 112, and senior Trevor Squires was one shot worse with a 113. The final counting score came from sophomore Abram Collins, who shot a 117.

Freshman Logan Ingersoll (123) and sophomore Cade Dibello (139) had the two non-counting scores.

The Lynnville-Sully boys play at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the North Mahaska Invitational in New Sharon. Both Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully return to North Mahaska for a Class 1A sectional at 10 a.m. Friday in New Sharon.
