Tigerhawk girls finish second at Tulip Time Relays

PELLA — Colfax-Mingo senior Dakota Hostetter is known for distance running. She’s a two-time state qualifier in the 1,500-meter run and she has helped the Tigerhawks to three straight state meet trips as the 800 anchor leg on the distance medley relay.

As her career comes to a close, Hostetter is starting to show she can get it done in the sprints, too.

Hostetter won the 200 at the annual Tulip Time Relays on Thursday. That finish, and three other wins, helped the Tigerhawks to a second-place team finish.

Colfax-Mingo edged Lynnville-Sully by a point for the runner-up position. The Tigerhawks scored 92 points. Pekin cruised to the team title with 181 points. L-S (91), North Mahaska (86), Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (72), Pella Christian (60) and Twin Cedars (1) also competed in the Class A field.

Hostetter and freshman Abbey McConeghey were part of two wins on the night.

Hostetter won the 200 with a time of 27.8 seconds, which ranks in the top 30 in Class 1A.

McConeghey grabbed another 1,500 gold medal. She finished that race in 5 minutes, 16.10 seconds.

Hostetter and McConeghey teamed up with Jordan Atwood and sophomore Colbee Cunningham to win the distance medley relay. Atwood and Cunningham ran the 200 legs, Hostetter sprinted around the track once and McConeghey went twice around as the anchor leg. They finished in a season-best 4 minutes, 37.16 seconds, which currently ranks 14th in 1A.

The other first-place finish came from senior Alivia Haley in the discus. She won the event with a throw of 99 feet, 0 inches.

The Tigerhawks went 1-4 in the discus and finished 2-3 in the shot put.

In the shot put, junior Rhiannon Haley took second with a season-best toss of 33 feet, 5 inches. Sophomore Braedynn Rawlins finished third with a throw of 32-9 1/2.

The final top-three finish on the night came from sophomore Ilia Hostetter in the 3,000. Hostetter finished second with a time of 12:37.20.

The Tigerhawks compete in the South Iowa Cedar League outdoor meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Iowa Valley.
