Jason Mikkelson wins tourney, rolls a 300

A funny thing happened on his way to winning the second annual Fred Brown Memorial Scratch Tournament, Jason Mikkelson rolled a 300 game. It wasn’t the 25-year bowling veteran from Newton’s first perfect game.

“The nerves were still there,” Mikkelson said. “I just relaxed and finished it.”

Mikkelson said he saw the information for the tournament, which is held at Mustang Lanes in Monroe, on Mustang Lanes’ Facebook page. He said he wanted to give it a try.

“I bowled in the first stage and didn’t bowl well, so I was able to re-enter and bowl the second stage. I did much better,” he said.

Mikkelson finished with a 940 series to advance to the step-ladder rolloffs. He opened with a 234 followed by a 227 then came the 300 game. He finished his four-game series with a 179.

Mikkelson had a first-round bye in the single-elimination part of the tournament. To win the tournament, he bowled a 212 to defeat Kyle Clark, who had 188.
