NHS girls’ tennis drops LHC dual

After playing a dual a week ago where they had seven of 11 matches go to third-set tiebreakers, Newton High’s girls played 11 matches in straight sets on Tuesday against visiting Pella. Pella’s Lady Dutch won the Little Hawkeye Conference dual, 10-1.

Newton’s only win was by default. The Cardinals’ No. 1 doubles team of Katherine Thorpe and Bethany Baumgartner trailed Pella’s Brooke Jorgensen and Lily Roozeboom by a set then two games into the second set, the Lady Dutch pair retired.

Pella won the other varsity matches in two sets. Jorgensen beat Thorpe 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Roozeboom defeated Baumgartner 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Cecily Johnson took a 6-0, 6-0 win over Newton’s Natalie Camp at No. 3 singles.

Linzie Loree lost 6-1, 6-1 to Pella’s Bronwyn Metcalf at No. 4 singles. Pella’s Natalie Meyer won 6-2, 6-0 over Newton’s Harlie Durr at No. 5 singles. In the No. 6 singles match, Patience Dykstra beat Newton’s Alexis Hoffman 6-0, 6-0.

Johnson and Metcalf won 6-0, 6-1 over Newton’s Camp and Loree at No. 2 doubles. Meyer and Dykstra beat Newton’s Durr and Hoffman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Pella’s Hana Blom and Kaylee Butler beat Newton’s Emily Valtman and Rylie Bakalar 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 doubles. In the No. 5 doubles match, Pella’s Mary Sales and Bailey Bartels defeated Newton’s Katie Suttek and Kallista Rogers 6-0, 6-0.

The Cardinals travel to Norwalk for a 4:15 p.m. LHC dual on Thursday.
