Youngsters compete for NHS boys at Lincoln meet

DES MOINES — Younger athletes were given opportunities to compete in varsity track competition for Newton High’s Cardinals Thursday. A group of upperclassman were competing at another meet Thursday.

In the 28th Annual Bob VanderLinden/Lincoln Invitational hosted by Des Moines Lincoln High’s boys, Newton finished sixth with 31 points. Des Moines Lincoln won the team title with 186 points followed by Waukee with 139 points and Woodward Academy with 125.

Des Moines North took fourth with 51 points. Fort Dodge scored 49 points for fifth.

Newton’s two younger varsity throwers had a strong meet.

Sophomore Jaise Gulling claimed third in both the discus and the shot put with throws of 127 feet, 5 inches and 44-6, respectively. Junior Jace Lukefahr placed fifth in the discus, 123-4, and senior Caden Manning was sixth in the shot put at 44 feet.

Freshman Jeremiah Johnson ran fourth in the 400-meter dash in 54.63 seconds. Newton assistant coach Trent Powers said the three runners finishing ahead of Johnson were seniors.

“Jaise had a great night placing in the shot and discus,” Powers said. “Our young guys put up some good times and gained a lot of valuable experience against varsity competition.”

Senior Keith Steinbach finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-2. Seniors Noah Sander and Adam Hunter ran sixth in the 1,600 and the 3,200, respectively. Sander’s 1,600 time was 5 minutes, 4.55 seconds and Hunter ran a time of 11:49.26 in the 3,200.

Steinbach combined with freshmen Dylan Farver, William Cheng and Cody Satterfield in two relay races. The foursome was fifth in the 4x200 in 1:44.37 and fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay in 110.06.

Sander anchored the distance medley relay to fifth place. He was joined by senior Spencer Elbert and freshmen Logan Cummins and Camden Winther for a time of 4:17.20.

Elbert, Cummins, Johnson and junior Clayton Baltisberger turned in a sixth-place time of 49.40 seconds in the 4x400 relay race. Baltisberger, Cummins, Winther and junior Josh Miravalles were sixth in 1:44.32 in the sprint medley relay race.

Newton scored 51 points for third place in the junior varsity division. The junior varsity Cardinals were led by sophomore Ben Peterson, who won the discus with a throw of 109-9 and won the shot put with a distance of 43-1/2.

Sophomore Landon Criswell took second in the shot put with a throw of 39-11. He was fourth in the discus at 105-11.

Hunter was fourth in the 1,600 in 5:23.03 and junior Dylan Main was fourth in the 3,200 in 12:22.38. Farver was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 106.03. Senior Skyler Tool placed eighth in the 400 meters in 104.99.

In the JV 4x100 relay, Newton’s team of sophomore Tucker Cupples, freshman Dalton Altemeier, Cheng and Satterfield took fifth in 51.97.

Newton’s boys compete at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Norwalk.
