PCM girls finish fourth at Norwalk

NORWALK — The Prairie City-Monroe girls’ track and field team held its own at the Norwalk High School Co-Ed Track Meet on Monday night despite being the smallest of the eight teams in attendance.

The Mustangs won two events, scored five runner-up finishes and placed fourth as the lone Class 2A school.

Host Norwalk won the meet with 133 points, Dallas Center-Grimes scored 128 points and Grinnell was third with 109.5 points. PCM scored 100 points in fourth. The rest of the field was Winterset (98.5), South Tama County (84), Knoxville (51) and Nevada (30).

“The Norwalk meet is always a tough one for us because we are the only 2A school there,” PCM coach Bridget Martin said. “It’s a great opportunity for us to take advantage of some tough competition. Not only was the competition tough, but so were the weather conditions.”

Senior Jayci Vos won another gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles. This time, she finished the race in 1 minute, 10 seconds.

The other win came in the 4x400 relay. That foursome included sophomore Paytan Schut, freshman Sierra Foster and seniors Tatum Nearmyer and Rachel Stafford, and they finished in 4:28.36.

“We did a good job competing with the competition,” Martin said. “As the season progresses, we continue to try to figure out a few things. This team has a lot of different options and potential in a variety of events. We will continue to focus on getting better every day.”

Individually, sophomore Maddie Samson was the runner-up in the shot put and Stafford placed second in the 800.

Samson’s silver-medal throw was marked at 32 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and Stafford’s time in the 800 was clocked at 2:33.96.

Three relays were second — the 4x200, 4x800 and shuttle hurdle.

In the 4x200, junior Ashley Miller, Foster, Nearmyer and Vos finished in 1:56.03.

The 4x800 team of Schut, Ives, freshman Sayde White and Stafford finished in 10:33.26.

The shuttle hurdle relay included sophomore Megan Cowman, freshman Lexie Kuecker, sophomore Morgan Uhlenhopp and Vos. That group was clocked at 1:12.80.

The Mustangs compete at 5 p.m. Thursday at Guthrie Center.
