Newton girls finish second at Boone track meet

BOONE — Dropping temperatures didn’t deter Newton High’s girls on the track or in the field events of the rescheduled Boone Girls’ Invitational track meet Monday.

Host Boone dominated the varsity division with a winning 167.5 points. The Cardinals amassed 99 points for second with Marshalltown and Fort Dodge tied for third place with 69 points apiece. Des Moines Roosevelt scored 64 points for fifth.

Newton won three events, had three personal-best performances and one season-best performance.

In the junior varsity division, Newton was second to Boone — 95 points, 83 points. Fort Dodge was third with 30.5 points followed by Roosevelt with 23.5 and Marshalltown with 20.

“The temperature dropped steadily throughout the meet but the girls competed well despite that,” Newton coach Rachelle Tipton said. “On a night such as this, it is exciting for both teams to come away with second place. It makes the dreariness a little less dreary.”

Starting with the field events in the varsity division, Haley Revell won the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 8 inches and Miranda Ervin was third at 30-11 1/2. Audrey Lucas had a season’s-best throw of 99-11 to claim third in the discus and Revell was fifth at 91’4.

Abbie Barr tied for second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-6. In the long jump Lakin Jenkins was fifth with a leap of 13-3 1/2 and Sydney Hook was sixth at 12-5 1/2.

Tessa Keeton gave the Cardinals the win in the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 8.24 seconds and Jenkins was third in 1:10.44. Keeton anchored the Newton’s 4x400 to a gold medal in the final race of the meet. She combined with Barr, Jenkins and Rachel Berkland for the winning time of 4:41.12.

“Tessa looked strong the whole race (400), she was in an inside lane and you could tell she was ready to chase girls down,” Tipton said. “Audrey had a big throw in discus just shy of triple digits and that is now firmly in her sights.”

Berkland recorded a personal-best time of 1:11.55 in finishing second in the 400 hurdles. Gerima Blair and Molly Coy each ran a personal-best time in going second and third, respectively, in the 800-meter, in 2:50.74 and 2:53.84.

The quartet of Barr, Liz McVey, Lucas and Morgann Eide took second in the 4x100 shuttle hurdle really in 1:13.20. Lucas ran the 100-meter hurdles in 20.89 seconds, but didn’t place in the top sixth.

“Rachel is coming in to the 400 hurdles nicely,” Tipton said. “She had a great kick down the home stretch and almost caught the girl for the win.”

In the sprint medley relay race, Newton’s foursome of Liv Whitten, Morgan Allen, Barr and Berkland was third in 2:04.07. Original Tesfay placed third in the 3,000 meters in 14:13.76. Caelyn Briley took sixth in the 1,500 in 6:22.31.

Newton’s distance medley relay team of Serenity Stier, Priscilla Amador, Hannah Boecker and Briley finished second in 5:23.23. Taking third place was the 4x100 relay team of McVey, Eide, Allen and Karley Leiker in 55.93 seconds.

Hook placed fifth in the 200 dash in 31.85 seconds and Boecker was sixth in 32.07. In the 4x200 relay, the team of Allen, Leiker, Hook and Teddie Brunsmann posted a fifth-place time of 2:06.20. Leiker was sixth in the 100-meter dash in 14.55 and Rheagan Oldfield ran a 15.88, not placing in the top six.
