CMB girls soccer ends long losing streak

WEBSTER CITY — The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls’ soccer team scored two goals all of last season. After only two matches in 2017, the Raiders have already blew way past that number.

After tallying its first goal in the season-opening loss to Gilbert on Thursday, CMB broke through with five goals in a win over Webster City on Friday. The Raiders led 2-1 at halftime and added three more goals in the second half to win 5-2 on the road.

The win was the first victory for the Raiders since defeating Prairie City-Monroe, 3-2, in 2014. The losing streak ended at 32 matches.

The five goals by CMB were the most goals scored in a single match in at least seven years.

Webster City’s Sarah Vogelbacher put the Lynx up 1-0 in the sixth minute, but CMB junior Tatum Tremain gave the Raiders a halftime lead with two first-half goals.

Tremain’s first goal was set up by freshman Caitlyn Bruntz in the 11th minute. She gave the Raiders (1-1) a lead for good when she converted a penalty kick in the 39th minute after Autumn Engle was tackled in the box.

Bruntz set up senior Emily Coughenour early in second half to put the Raiders up 3-1 in the 51st minute.

The final two goals for CMB were four minutes apart in the 64th and 68th minute. Freshman Maya Phelps snuck a shot just under the cross bar to make it 4-1, and then Bruntz completed CMB’s scoring to make it 5-1.

Vogelbacher scored her second goal of the game for Webster City in the 78th minute, but CMB went on to win for the first time in four seasons.

CMB out-shot Webster City 29-10 and had a 14-6 shots on goal advantage. The Raiders also took 11 corner kicks to Webster City’s three.

Raider senior goalkeeper Amanda Harrington had the win between the pipes, recording four saves.

North Polk 7, CMB 1

MAXWELL — The Raiders trailed 2-1 at halftime, but North Polk (1-2) scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half and didn’t look back in the Heart of Iowa Conference victory on Friday.

Sophomore Josh Bruntz scored CMB’s only goal, while sophomore Brendyn Padget had 11 saves in goal.

The Raiders (0-3) took 16 shots, 13 of which were on goal.

“That was a big improvement by our team,” CMB coach Crystal Bruntz said. “Shots were taken by seven different players.”
