Cardinal girls lose tennis opener

BOONE — Newton High’s girls lost their season-opening tennis dual, 11-1, to host Boone on Thursday. The Cardinals went down swinging as most of the matches were competitive with the Toreadors.

Newton’s lone win came at No. 3 singles. Junior Bethany Baumgartner netted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Boone’s Choloe Gordon. At No. 5 singles, the Cardinals’ junior Kinzie Loree won the second set to force a third-set tiebreaker against Boone’s Myra Bernard. Bernard won the match 6-4, 2-6, (6-0).

Seniors Megan Pressgrove and Katherine Thorpe played at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, for Newton. Pressgrove lost 6-0, 6-0 to Boon’s Davi Patterson and Thorpe was beaten by Grace Krafcisin, 6-0, 6-1.

Newton junior Natalie Camp played a tough match against Boone’s Lauren Wieland at No. 4 singles. Wieland pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win over Camp. At No. 6 singles, Boone’s Kate Peasley defeated Newton junior Harlie Durr, 6-2, 6-2.

Pressgrove and Thorpe combined for the Cardinals’ No. 1 doubles team, but forfeited the match to Patterson and Gordon. Newton head coach Erick Zehr said Pressgrove withdrew from the match, giving Boone a 1-0, 1-0 win.

Baumgartner and Camp lost 6-0, 6-0 to Morganne Borsh and Krafcisin at No. 2 doles. Loree and Durr dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 3 doubles to Boone’s Wieland and Bernard.

Senior Ryanne Rausch and junior Alexis Hoffman had the best doubles match for the Cardinals. The pair won the second set against Peasley and Gabby Fuentes to push to a third-set tiebreaker. The Boone duo won the tightly-contested tiebreaker to record a 7-5, 2-6, (10-8) win.

Newton juniors Rylie Bakalar and Katie Suttek lost 6-0, 6-1 to Emily Edmonson and Brooke Young in the No. 5 doubles match.

Newton (0-1) is back on the road Friday to play at 4 p.m. against Marshalltown. On Monday, the Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. at Des Moines East for a third straight non-conference dual.

The Cardinals open Little Hawkeye Conference play at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at home against Grinnell.

Newton and Boone also played junior varsity doubles matches Thursday.
