WEST DES MOINES — Playing in not-so pleasant weather conditions, Newton High’s boys came up short in their first Little Hawkeye Conference golf competition of the 2017 season Monday.
Host Norwalk won the triangular with a 165 team score followed by Oskaloosa at 167. The Cardinals combined to finish third with a 168.
Newton’s Austin Reynolds was the meet medalist with a 37 for the nine-hole meet played on Willow Creek Golf Course. Trey Vanderlaan tied for fourth overall with a 40.
Paul Maharry carded a 43 and Shaiden Simmons shot a 48. Sam Supino finished with a 49 and Devon Young had a 55.
In the junior varsity division, Newton was second with a team score of 217. Norwalk won with a 172 and Oskaloosa was third at 266.
Leading Newton’s junior varsity were Damon Reynolds with a 50 and Nate Vanzee with a 52. Evan Walker shot a 55 followed by Michael Hodnett with a 60 and Nate Kieth with a 65.
The Cardinals are back in action at 4:15 p.m. on April 11 in a LHC triangular with Dallas Center-Grimes and host Grinnell at Grinnell Country Club.
