Mustang boys finish second at Roland-Story quad

STORY CITY — The weather hasn’t cooperated that well with track and field teams so far this spring.

Despite cold temperatures Friday, the Prairie City-Monroe boys still found a way to successfully perform in a quadrangular meet at Roland-Story.

The Mustangs won two individual running events, two field events and two relays during a second-place team finish. PCM claimed nine runner-up finishes and three third-place tallies as well.

“It was a good night,” PCM coach Collin Harrison said. “It was cold, but we are improving despite the weather not really being great yet.”

PCM scored 92.5 points in second place. Host Roland-Story won the meet with 108 points, while Southeast Valley (46) was third and Hampton-Dumont (29) finished fourth.

Senior Luke Greiner, junior Noah Anderson and sophomore Cole Dustin all won individual events and helped a relay team to wins.

Greiner won the long jump, and sophomore Brayton Van Dyke gave PCM a 1-2 finish in the event. Greiner won with a leap of 18 feet, 3 1/2 inches, while Van Dyke hit 18-2 1/2.

Anderson was the winner in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 23.28 seconds. Sophomore Preston Van Wyk took third in 24.1.

Anderson’s time ranks ninth in Class 2A so far this season.

Greiner, Van Dyke and Anderson teamed up with senior Chris Ellens to win the distance medley relay. That foursome finished in 4 minutes, 0 seconds.

Dustin was the 110 high hurdle winner as he crossed the finish line in 16.44 seconds.

Dustin also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to a win. The other three Mustangs in that event were sophomores Nick Buswell, Nick Dredge and Jarron Trausch.

The other win came from senior Noah Clark in the discus. Clark’s top throw was 144 feet, 8 inches.

Senior Leevi Telfer gave the Mustangs more points after taking second in the shot put. Telfer’s top toss covered 43-9.

That discus throw for Clark puts him seventh in 2A so far this season.

“I was proud of Noah, that’s a good throw in the kind of weather we had tonight,” Harrison said.

PCM claimed four other individual runner-up finishes on the night. Van Wyk was second in the 100 with a personal-best time of 11.71, junior Noah Henkenius finished second in the 400 in 55.3, Dredge’s finished the 400 hurdles in 1:04 in finishing second and Dustin took the silver in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.

Van Wyk’s time in the 100 ranks him eighth in 2A.

Three relays finished second — the 4x100, 4x800 and sprint medley relays.

In the 4x100, Greiner, Anderson, Van Dyke and Van Wyk finished with a personal-best time of 45.7.

The foursome currently sits sixth in 2A.

The sprint medley relay included Greiner, Anderson, Henkenius and Van Wyk and that foursome finished in 1:43. The Mustangs currently have the sixth best time in 2A.

The 4x800 relay included junior Blake Lee, freshman Nigel Sperfslage, junior Brady North and freshman Conner Fagen. That quartet grabbed the silver with a time of 9:48.

Ellens was third in both the 1,600 and 3,200.

In the mile, Ellens finished with a personal-best time of 4:53.7.

Ellens stopped the clock in the two mile in 10:16.7, which is a personal record by seven seconds.

Ellens, who is yet to win an individual event, is ranked fourth in the 3,200 in 2A.

“We are taking steps in the right direction,” Harrison said. “We’ve had a great start to the year.”
