Newton club sweeps top three spots at sporting clays shoot

NEVADA — Newton Trap Team members went first, second and third in their season-opening competition Sunday. The Cardinals competed in a sporting clays shoot hosted by Nevada.

Logan Zaabel edged out teammate Dawson Cobler for first place with a score of 60. Cobler had a 59 which was followed by Newton’s Brian Bleakney with a 53. All three boys are seniors.

Newton had seven shooters competing in the 20-shooter field with Waterloo Christian and Nevada.

“It wasn’t a very easy course and we are not usually very strong in sporting clays, so I was really impressed with the scores we had,” Newton head coach Paul Klein said. “This was a great way to start our season.”

Newton competes in a trap shoot April 8 at Marshalltown.
