NFD promotes fire awareness

Weather conditions forecasted the next several days include unseasonably warm and dry weather for February. Many people will get a head start on spring cleanup, including burning.

As a reminder, when burning in the open, make sure you are controlling the fire, the Newton Fire Department warns. Know the wind direction and conditions of what you are burning. Do not start fires near buildings or vehicles. Open field fires can quickly become uncontrolled with just a small change in wind speed. Fires should never be left unattended. Proper protective clothing should also be worn, including appropriate footwear, pants, long sleeve shirts/coats, gloves and eye protection.

If you are planning a significant controlled burn you should contact your local fire chief or the sheriff’s office for directions and any permitting that may be required. Large controlled burns should be reported to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch at 641-792-5912.

Fire Departments may have difficulty accessing your location due to soft field conditions.
