Cardinals deck Huskies

WINTERSET — Newton High’s Cardinals methodically dismantled their hosts, the Winterset Huskies, in Monday’s non-conference basketball game. Newton improved to 15-5 with a 75-52 win over the Huskies (6-15).

Newton shared the basketball with 21 assists led by senior Trey Vanderlaan’s eight assists and senior Josh Ventling dishing out six assists.

“We did a great job of sharing the basketball, which was the key to it tonight,” Newton head coach Bill Liley said. “Trey and Josh really set the tone for how we were going to play tonight. They got everyone the ball in great position to score.”

After a 21-14 first-quarter run, the Cardinals outscored Winterset 20-11 in the second period. Newton held a 41-25 halftime advantage.

By the end of the third quarter, the Cardinals had opened a 20-point lead, 60-40. They closed it out on a 15-12 scoring surge in the fourth period.

Senior Connor Gholson had the hot hand for the Cardinals, draining seven 3-pointers. He scored a game-high 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Junior Garrett Sturtz had 15 points and two steals.

The Cardinals went 12-of-23 from behind the 3-point arc in the game for 52 percent. Vanderlaan hit three treys on his way to 11 points.

Overall, Newton shot 50 percent, 26-of-52, from the field compared to 40 percent, 20-of-50, by the Huskies. At the free-throw line, the Cardinals cashed in on 11-of-15 attempts and the Huskies went 3-of-4.

Ventling made two steals, grabbed five rebounds and scored nine points. Senior Morgan Maher had two steals.

“Winterset is a good, young basketball team. They’re going to be a really good team next year,” Liley said. “I think our older guys showed them how they need to play next year. It was fun because we showed them how to share the basketball.”

Easton Darling fired in five of the Huskies’ nine 3-pointers as he scored 23 points. Casey Kleemeier added 13 points, which included three 3-pointers.

Newton won the junior varsity game, 65-56. Grant Garvis fired in 18 points, had six rebounds, dished out four assists and had two steals. Aaron Bartels scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds.
