Newton freshman girls hold tourney

Newton High’s freshman girls hosted a small tournament Saturday. The Cardinals went 0-2.

They dropped a close decision, 28-25, to Knoxville. They led 11-9 at halftime, but Knoxville had a 10-5 run in the third quarter. Each team scored nine points in the final period.

Kameron Nehring hit four 3-pointers on her way to 21 points for Newton. She also had six rebounds. Malarie Zach had four points and three assists. Liv Whitten grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Ballard powered past Newton, 45-12. Newton trailed 27-7 at halftime.

Zach scored four points and pulled down three rebounds. Nehring, Whitten and Tes Schuster each had two points.

Nehring and Courtney Dawson each had three rebounds.

Priscila Amador made two assists. Kameron Johnston had two steals.

Newton’s freshman girls and boys and the Cardinal junior varsity boys host Norwalk Monday. The freshman games are at 6 p.m. and the junior varsity boys’ game is at 7:30 p.m.
