Sixth-ranked Hawks deck Tigerhawk boys in SICL play

SULLY — Defensive energy provided fuel for a runaway victory in South Iowa Cedar League conference play for the Class 1A sixth-ranked Lynnville-Sully Hawks.

The Hawks held the visiting Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks to 31-percent shooting in a 78-26 victory.

The Hawks had control early, leading 26-5 at the end of the first quarter. Lynnville-Sully took a 50-12 lead into the break. The Hawks outscored the Tigerhawks 28-14 in the second half.

Lynnville-Sully pushed its SICL record to 13-1 and went to 17-1 overall. Colfax-Mingo dropped to 8-8 in the conference and 8-10 overall.

“The guys came out and played with great defensive energy. That energy spilled over to all aspects of the game,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We really shared the ball offensively and it showed with 24 assists.”

Colfax-Mingo played without its leading scorer and rebounder Jarod Nichols, who was out ill. Tigerhawk head coach Nick Noring said the entire team and Colfax-Mingo school was battling sickness.

“We’re looking forward to a six-day break to recover before our next game,” Noring said. “I also have one key player suspended, but can’t comment further on this situation at this current moment.”

Lynnville-Sully knocked down 11 3-pointe field goals as the Hawks shot 58 percent, 33-of-57, from the field overall. Each team went 1-of-2 at the free-throw line. The Tigerhawks were 10-of-32 from the field, hitting five 3-pointers.

Tyler Van Zante netted four treys for the Hawks in scoring a game-high 18 points. Van Zante handled five rebounds and had six assists. Jesse Van Wyk dished out seven assists, made four steals and scored 12 points.

Brevin Hansen, who hit three 3-pointers, and Rylan James each scored 13 points. James grabbed five rebounds and Hansen had four assist.

Leading the Tigerhawks were Reegan Van Dyke and Alex Lewis with seven points apiece. Van Dyke controlled 10 of the team’s 20 rebounds and Lewis had five rebounds.

Brady Berkey and Jonathan Jacobs had three assists apiece. The Tigerhawks had 21 turnovers in the game.

Lynnville-Sully is at home for a 7:30 p.m. SICL game against Iowa Valley on Thursday in Sully.

Colfax-Mingo is idle until Monday. The Tigerhawks host Eddyvlle-Blakesburg-Fremont at 7:30 p.m. in Colfax for a non-conference game.
