NHS girls upend Oskaloosa, boys lose in a close one on Senior Day

Facing the top bowling teams in the conference on Senior Day, Newton High’s Cardinal girls and boys had a strong day on their home lanes.

The Cardinal girls handed the visiting Oskaloosa girls their first dual loss of the season. Newton had a resounding 197-pin win, 2,058-1,861.

Newton’s varsity boys were in front of the Indian boys by 22 pins heading into the Baker Games round in a close match Saturday. They were holding onto the lead until the third and fourth Baker Games — Oskaloosa rolled a 187 and a 237 to Newton’s 151 and 145.

Oskaloosa’s boys pulled out a 2,703-2,616 victory over the Newton boys.

Before the action got started Saturday at Cardinal Lanes, Newton honored its six senior bowlers. They are Lizzy Coyle, Reid Miller, Derek Landgrebe, Joe Malsom, Sam Supino and Zion Dickey.

“The boys had a battle on their hands and had the lead the majority of the match,” Newton head coach Seth Banwell said. “They stayed focused and gave it their all. We had some bad breaks that could have easily put us on top over Oskaloosa.”

Junior Shaiden Simmons led the Newton boys with a 405 series, on games of 193 and 212. Supino rolled a 398 with games of 191 and 207. Miller finished with a 352 (168-184) and freshman Alex Frymoyer turned in a 319 (154-165).

Reece Thurmond, a junior, had a 302 (129-173). Junior Austin Johansen finished with a 296 (136-154). Newton Baker Games round scores were 193, 168, 151, 145, 183.

“The boys stayed in the lead until the fourth Baker Game, where Oskaloosa pulled ahead with a great 237 game. We’re proud of the guys for their perseverance and their drive to make every shot count.” Banwell said.

Newton girls were put on their pace to upend Oskaloosa by the first game of sophomore Taylor Johnson. Johnson rolled a 183 opening game and finished with s 322 series. Also putting together 300 series were Coyle and sophomore Alicia Miller.

Coyle had a 306 won games of 135 and 171 while Milelr had a 302 (161-141). Junior Kaytie Hughes finished with a 249 (117-132), junior Alyssa White had a 218 (116-102) and sophomore Keely Birkenholtz had a 209 (104-105).

“The girls had a commanding lead throughout their match and ended a perfect season for Oskaloosa,” Banwell said. “The girls did a great job converting most of their spares. Taylor’s huge first game set the momentum in our favor. The girls were fired up and very supportive during every shot.”

The Newton girls’ Baker Games round scores were 117, 129, 132, 116, 167.

Newton’s junior varsity No. 1 beat Oskaloosa’s junior varsity, 2.249-1,398. It was led by sophomore Cutter Benac with a 362 (169-193). Other scores were: freshman Nate Keith 326 (180-146), junior Michael Hodnett 209 (143-166), Malsom 260 (118-142), sophomore Devon Young 227 (111-116). Baker Games scores were 160, 160, 142, 137, 166.

The Newton girls’ junior varsity had a 1,716 final score with Baker Games scores of 85, 103, 123, 138, 90. Scores were freshman Ashley Loehr 327 (170-157), sophomore Chloe Butler 242 (154-88), junior Mariah Wolfe 212 (73-139), freshman Gabby Pickerell 201 (87-114), sophomore Danielle Ambers 195 (92-103).

Newton JV boys’ No. 2 had a 2,017 with Baker Games scores of 128,152, 127, 128, 108. Scores were freshman Carter VanderSchel 297 (143-154), junior Tayler Hernandez 295 (174-121), freshman Elijah Ingle 280 (129-151), sophomore John Ladewig 255 (148-107), sophomore Alex Burkett 247 (124-123).

A Newton co-ed junior varsity team had a 1,383 with Baker Games scores of 94, 99, 133, 106, 119. Scores were sophomore Devon Hobbs 247 (143-104), Landgrebe 240 (114-126), freshman Alex Wolfe 208 (124-84), junior Alyssa Carlock 173 (64-73).

“Congratulations to all of the bowling seniors on a great season. You will be truly missed next year.” Banwell said.

Newton’s bowling teams concluded their dual action in an 11 a.m. match Saturday against Knoxville at Mustang Lanes in Monroe. Newton hosts the Little Hawkeye Conference meet Feb. 11 at Cardinal Lanes.
