Hawk boys avenge loss, girls lose for first time

MONTEZUMA — Lynnville-Sully’s boys avenged their only loss of the season with a 63-51 victory over host Montezuma’s Braves in South Iowa Cedar League play on Friday night.

The Braves cut the Hawks’ lead to two points late in the fourth quarter then the Hawks scored the final 10 points for the win.

“Both teams came out and shot the ball real well,” Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We were able to create a little lead in the second quarter. Monte made a run, but the guys hung tough. It was a good road win for the Hawks.”

In the girls’ game Friday, Montezuma’s Bravettes handed Class 1A 10th-ranked Hawk girls their first loss of the season, 39-33, in a South Iowa Cedar League showdown in Montezuma.

The loss dropped the Hawk girls to 18-1 overall and 15-1 in SICL play. Montezuma improved to 13-4 and 12-2.

“I am proud of how hard the girls played tonight. I thought they really battled, even when things didn’t go our way they handled it with class,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We could not get anything going on the offensive end, I thought we had some good looks just could not get anything to fall.”

The Bravettes was up 8-6 at the conclusion of the first period and led the visiting Hawks 18-15 at halftime. Going into the final quarter, Montezuma was still up by three, 28-25, and staved off the Hawks down the stretch.

Montezuma sank 13-of-20 free throw attempts to Lynnville-Sully’s 3-of-12. Lynnville-Sully shot just 31 percent, 14-of-44, from the field and had 17 turnovers. The Bravettes had a 34-31 rebounding edge.

“Our defense was OK — maybe gave up a couple open looks, but for the most part we were good,” Hulsing said. “Our free throw shooting was the big difference.”

Brenna Lanser paced the Hawks with 13 points and four steals. Mariah Vos had eight rebounds and had three steals. Carson Fisk scored eight points and Camryn Russell had four assists.

Shelby Helm led Montezuma with 16 points, hitting 8-of-9 free throw tries. Breck Goodman had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys improved 16-1 overall and 12-1 in SICL play with the win Friday night.

The Hawk boys were up 21-18 at the end of the first quarter and held a 39-30 halftime advantage. Montezuma outscored Lynnville-Sully 11-7 in the third quarter, but the Hawks still had the lead, 46-41.

After the Braves used a 10-7 run to pull with two points, 53-51, Lynnville-Sully sealed the win with 10 unanswered points. The difference came at the free-throw line where the Hawks cashed in on 22-of-35 foul shots to the Braves’ 4-of-15.

Jesse Van Wyk scored 15 points, had seven rebounds and four assists for the Hawks, Tanner Foster tossed in 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. Rylan James had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Brevin Hansen had 13 points and steals.

Logan Price had 23 points for Montezuma. Dakota Strong had 15 points.

Lynnville-Sully’s teams host Colfax-Mingo in conference play at 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys on Tuesday in Sully.
