Regional pairings for girls’ basketball Class 1A, 2A, 3A set

Class 1A 11th-ranked Lynnville-Sully’s girls earned a first-round bye in Class 1A Region 5 basketball postseason tournament play. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released basketball regional pairings for Class 1A, 2A and 3A Monday.

Prairie City-Monroe and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter are in Class 3A Region 8 and Region 4 tournaments, respectively. Colfax-Mingo was assigned to Class 2A Region 6.

The four area girls’ basketball teams know which teams they will have to beat to claim a state tournament berth. All games in all regionals are set for 7 p.m.

Lynnville-Sully, 1A sixth-ranked Marquette Catholic and Belle Plaine have the first-round byes in Class 1A Region 5. Lynnville-Sully (17-0) is one of three undefeated teams in Class 1A and is one of 12 undefeated teams for all classes. The Hawks lost to Kee in a 1A regional final last year.

Colfax-Mingo, which lost to North Tama in a 1A regional opener a year ago, steps into Class 2A Region 6 action on Feb. 11. Seventh-ranked Pella Christian, 10th-ranked Cascade, Montezuma and Clayton Ridge have the first-round byes in Region 6.

In Class 3A Region 4, CMB has No. 6 Clear Lake and No. 13 Humboldt in the bracket. CMB lost in its regional opener a year ago.

For PCM (12-3), it has the opportunity to play two home games if it wins its 3A Region 8 opener against Albia on Feb. 11. The Mustangs, who lost to Chariton in a 3A regional semifinal last year, will host a semifinal game in Monroe on Feb. 15. Region 8 has 3A seventh-ranked and undefeated West Marshall atop the bracket.

The other quarterfinal game on PCM’s side of the Region 8 bracket has Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont hosts Centerville on Feb. 11. The winner meets the winner of the PCM-Albia game on Feb. 15 in Monroe. The Region 8 championship game is on Feb. 18 at Bondurant.

West Marshall (16-0) hosts Saydel and Chariton hosts Clarke in the other two Region 8 quarterfinal games on Feb. 11. The winners play on Feb. 15 at State Center.

CMB (7-8) opens Class 3A Region 4 play Feb. 11 at North Polk. The winner meets the winner of No. 13 Humboldt vs. Hampton-Dumont on Feb. 15 at Humboldt. Clarion hosts the Region 4 championship game on Feb. 18.

Sixth-ranked Clear Lake hosts Dike-New Hartford and Osage hosts Oelwein on Feb. 11 in the other Region 4 quarterfinals. The winners play Feb. 15 at Clear Lake.

Three South Iowa Cedar League teams are in the Class 2A Region 6 tournament — Colfax-Mingo, North Mahaska and Montezuma. Colfax-Mingo (4-11) plays North Mahaska on Feb. 11 at New Sharon. The winner takes on 2A seventh-ranked Pella Christian on Feb. 14 at Pella in a quarterfinal. Pella Christian hosts a semifinal game on Feb. 17.

Montezuma hosts the winner of Aplington-Parkersburg and BCLUW, who play on Feb. 11 at Parkersburg, for a quarterfinal game. The quarterfinal winner plays in the semifinal game at Pella Christian.

On the other side of the regional bracket, opening-round games on Feb. 11 have Jesup hosting MFL MarMac and Wapsi Valley hosting South Winneshiek in Fairbank. On Feb. 14, the winner of the Jesup and MFL MarMac game plays at No. 10 Cascade while the winner of the Wapsi Valley and South Winneshiek game plays Clayton Ridge at Guttenberg. The 2A Region 6 championship game is Feb. 20 at Marengo.

Lynnville-Sully is one of five SICL teams in the Class 1A Region 5 tournament. It awaits the winner of Tri-County and English Valleys, both SICL teams, on Feb. 9 at Thornburg. The Hawks host the winner in a quarterfinal on Feb. 14 in Sully.

Also on the Hawks’ side of the regional bracket, opening-round games on Feb. 9 have Wayne hosting Twin Cedars in Corydon and Melcher-Dallas host Morman Trail at Melcher. The winners play in a quarterfinal on Feb. 14 at Corydon. Lynnville-Sully hosts the semifinal game on Feb. 17 in Sully.

The other two opening round games in 1A Region 5 have Central City hosting Midland and SICL’s Iowa Valley host Cedar Valley Christian in Marengo on Feb. 9. The winner of the Central Center and Midland game plays No. 6 Marquette Catholic on Feb. 14 at Bellevue while the winner of the Iowa Valley and Cedar Valley Christian game goes to SICL’s Belle Plaine on the same day.

Marquette Catholic hosts a semifinal game on Feb. 17 at Bellevue. The 1A Region 5 championship game is Feb. 20 at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School.

Regional champions advance to the 2017 IGHSAU state tournament Feb. 27-March 4 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The IGHSAU releases the Class 4A and 5A pairings Jan. 30.
