Column: Enjoy today

I would like to think I embrace change and that it is just a part of life. As of late, it seems like the seasons change quicker than I can keep up with.

The seasons of life seem to change just as quickly as summer turns into fall and fall turns into winter. My Christmas tree was up for three weeks, which may be normal for some people but not for me. It usually stays up for at least a month.

A lot of this hustle and bustle stems from just moving into a new home in December. This means the holidays flew by in a flash with a lot of change and a lot of extra to-do lists.

Not to mention this is the first year my fiancé has been living in Iowa with me for Christmas, which has brought on a lot of new and fun traditions. This past Christmas Eve was also the first time I didn’t sleep at my parents’ house and wake up there on Christmas morning. I guess I’m finally “adulting.” However, another new change this past year was opening gifts with my parents and sister in the evening of Christmas day instead of Christmas morning.

This new change wasn’t one I was too happy about embracing, but as you get older, schedules are different and you have to make do, and it turned out to be just as enjoyable.

Just as quickly things change in our personal lives, the world is changing just as fast.

So now, we are in mid-January and storefronts are piled up with heart-shaped boxes, teddy bears and other Valentine’s Day treats, President-elect Donald Trump is slated to officially take office Friday, Washington D.C. is in limbo as it changes parties, teens are flocking to see the latest movies in the new 4-D picture and there is still unending violence in our world that is in the news daily.

The fact of the matter is that change is constant. It’s easy to get caught up in your mile long to-do lists. As I tend to have three lists, a work to-do list, a wedding to-do list and the “miscellaneous” to-do list. It’s okay to feel the stress some days, but if I start my day with a positive attitude and a cup of coffee, I’m usually good to go.

I try to find the joy in every day even though I might not know what is to come next. I think that is very relevant with today’s world. There are a lot of unknowns to come with the new leader of our country, the weather and keeping up with today’s ever-changing technology.

In the midst of it all, I will remember to enjoy today and take it one to-do list at a time.
