Smith, Gulling claim seconds at Bettendorff Shoot Out

BETTENDORF — Brady Smith worked his way through the 182-pound division on Friday and early Saturday to reach the championship match at the 2017 Bettendorf Midwest Shootout. The Newton High senior found a familiar face waiting for him in the title bout — Class 3A third-ranked Spencer Sherwood of Burlington.

The two wrestlers met in round three of the Ottumwa Invitational a week ago with Sherwood winning 7-2. Sherwood pinned Smith in 1 minute, 6 seconds of Saturday’s tournament and Smith walked away with second place.

Smith came up with a 2-1 tie-breaker victory over Waukee’s Brandon Tessau in the semifinals. Smith had a bye to begin the tournament, beat Davenport Assumption’s Peter Laubenthal 12-4 and defeated Waverly-Shell Rock’s Brayden Wolf, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Smith had a 9-1 major decision over Waterloo West’s Dylan Meyer.

Newton sophomore Jaise Gulling also reach a championship match Saturday. He lost by a fall to Oswego’s Joe Majewski in 3:15 at 195. Gulling had two byes to open the tournament then won three straight matches to make the final.

Gulling put together a 13-4 major decision over Antioch’s Greg Kane. He pinned Bettendorf’s Alex Eltrheim in 3:47 in the quarterfinals. Gulling dispatched Assumption’s Seth Adrain with a 7-3 decision in a semifinal match.

In the 15-team tournament featuring squads from Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri, Newton finished 10th with 117.5 points. Johnston edged out Waverly-Shell Rock for the team title — 241.5 points to 240.5 points.

“We wrestled pretty well. I am proud of our kids and how they go out there and compete against top level opponents,” Newton head coach Andy Swedenhjelm said. “It’s exciting to have a group of kids who have no fear and will go out and give their best effort regardless of who is out there on the other line.”

Newton had seven wrestlers qualify for Saturday’s gold bracket competition following Friday’s action. Joining Smith and Gulling were sophomore Blake Cockerton (113), junior Ross Hull (126), senior Logan Zibert (152), senior Tanner Petro (170) and senior Alex Miller (220).

“Brady and Jaise did a great job earning their way to the finals,” Swedenhjelm said.

Cockerton finished sixth and Zibert was seventh. Hull and Miller each finished eighth. Hull lost 11-2 to Waverly-Shell Rock’s Bryson Hervol, who is ranked No. 9 in 3A at 126, in the quarterfinals. Miller faced Class 2A top-ranked Noah Brodenson of Assumption and was pinned in the quarterfinals.

Petro defeated Urbandale’s Austin Lamm, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A , 7-6 in the third round of the 170-pound division. Petro was 3-0 on Friday, but did not feel well enough to continue on Saturday, Swedenhjelm said.

Junior Tristin Langmaid placed ninth at 160, opening the tournament with a loss to Assumption’s Julien Boderson, ranked No. 4 in Class 2A. Sophomore Joseph Carolus was 10th at 132, losing his first match of the tournament to Bettendorf’s Will Jefferson, ranked No. 7 in 3A.

Freshman Zane Kohlmeyer lost in the third round at 138 to Camanche’s Nate Thomas, ranked No. 8 in Class 2A. Kohlmeyer placed 12th. Sophomore Blake Iske took 10th at 120.

In non-scoring competition for Newton, senior Aren Sorensen competed in the 113B bracket and was second. Freshman Gage Linahon competed at 220, finishing ninth, and was pinned by Waverly-Shell Rock’s Jacob Eggleston, who is ranked No. 8 in 3A.

“Gage did a great job wrestling as a junior variety wrestler and placing ninth in an extremely tough 220 bracket,” Swedenhjelm said. “It’s awesome to have the kind of depth in our program that your freshman junior variety wrestler can place right behind your varsity wrestler.”

It’s Senior Night at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for Newton, which hosts Grinnell in Little Hawkeye Conference action.
