PCM girls score road win over Roland-Story

STORY CITY — The Prairie City-Monroe girls basketball team buried a season-high nine 3-pointers and overcame a slow start to win their second straight game Friday, downing Roland-Story 48-42.

Senior Kayla Jennings hit four 3-pointers and scored 21 points for PCM, which improved to 9-2 overall and 8-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

“We came out a little slow,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said. “They packed it in on us, but we started to hit some open shots from the outside and that opened things up for us. We are starting to knock down the open looks.”

Freshman Regan Freland chipped in 11 points and hit three treys.

Senior Lexi Timmins hit two 3-pointers and scored seven points, dished out two assists and had two steals.

Freland added a career-high eight assists and grabbed five rebounds, Jennings dished out three assists and grabbed three boards and senior Katie Vande Wall pulled down six rebounds and dished out two assists.

The Mustangs led 10-8 after one quarter but went up by seven at halftime before playing nearly even with the Norse in the second half.

“We did a much better job handling the pressure in this one than we did against North Polk,” Lindsay said. “We were able to run some clock and maintain our lead.”

The Mustangs play Saydel at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Des Moines.
