Newton teams fall to ranked DCG; Area Prep Basketball Roundup

In the four area high school girl-boy doubleheaders Friday night, Newton lost to ranked Dallas Center-Grimes’ teams while Lynnville-Sully and CMB split games with oppoents, and Colfax-Mingo had a sweep of a road twin bill.

4A No. 12 Dallas Center-Grimes girls 56, Newton girls 24

GRIMES — Newton High’s Cardinal girls had no answer for the Class 4A 12th-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes’ trapping three-quarter court press, falling behind 16-0 in the first eight minutes of play Friday night. The DCG Fillies overpowered the Cardinals, 56-24, in a Little Hawkeye Conference contest.

Newton’s Ellie Horn scored on the inside to open the second quarter getting Newton on the scoreboard. Newton trailed 28-10 at halftime then the Fillies had a 9-0 run to start the third quarter.

The Cardinals scored nine points in the third period on three 3-pointers by Marcelina Marvelli. The Fillies’ lead stretched to 46-19 by the end of three quarters of play.

“It was a rough game for us as we had a hard time holding onto the ball,” Newton head coach Brandon Sharp said. “We had 23 turnovers just in the first half.”

Marvelli’s nine points led the Cardinals. Ryanne Rausch had six points.

“We made an adjustment and handled the press better, but their defense dictated how we played,” Sharp said. “We have to have a good week of practice before our next game.”

The Fillies (3-2, 2-0) were led in scoring by Mallory Vroegh with 13 points. Jenna Borchers and Rachel Lowary each scored 11 points.

DCG won the junior varsity game 47-17. Peyton Maher had seven points for Newton. Newton lost the freshman game, 55-14.

Newton dropped to 0-2 in LHC play and 2-4 overall. The Cardinals host Class 4A fifth-ranked Grinnell next Friday.

3A No. 10 Dallas Center-Grimes boys 66, Newton boys 60

GRIMES — Two 4-0 teams faced off Friday in Little Hawkeye Conference action so something had to give. Newton High’s Cardinals got beat at their own game by host Dallas Center-Grimes, 66-60.

The Class 3A 10th-ranked Mustangs used defense to hold the Cardinals to 24 points in the first half and sank free throws down the stretch to keep them at bay. The Cardinals made a run from a 15-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter.

Newton drilled five 3-pointers and got a three-point play from Josh Ventling to spark the run. It was 59-57 when Garrett Sturtz connected from beyond the arc with 1:53 left in the game. The Mustangs downed 5-of-10 free throws, had one basket, a steal and a couple of defensive rebounds in the final 1:44 to seal the win.

Newton had 12 3-pointers in the game led by Trey Vanderlaan’s six treys for 18 points. Sturtz finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Connor Gholson, who was held to five points in the first half, finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Ventling had five assists. Newton committed 11 turnovers.

At the free-throw line, the Mustangs converted 20-of-28 attempts while the Cardinals went 14-of-17. For the first time this season, Newton was out rebounded, 23-22.

Steve Borneman scored 19 points to pace the Mustangs. Trevor Grove had 15 points and Jordan Humphreys added 12 points.

DCG improved to 5-0 and 2-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. Newton is 4-1 and 1-1 in conference action. The Cardinals host Grinnell in LHC play Friday.

The junior varsity game went to DCG, 47-34. Aaron Bartels and Kyle Long each had nine points for Newton. Quintrail Coley pulled down eight rebounds.

Lynnville-Sully girls 57, 2A No. 13 Montezuma girls 45

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s girls used a strong first half to claim a 57-45 South Iowa Cedar League conference win at home against Class 2A 13th-ranked Montezuma on Friday.

The Hawks outscored the Bravettes 14-8 in the first quarter and led 30-17 at halftime. It was 39-24 after three periods. Montezuma pushed hard in the final eight minutes, outscoring Lynnville-Sully 21-18.

Lynnville-Sully cashed in on 25-of-30 free throws in the game. It shot 44 percent, 16-of-36, from the field. Montezuma went 9-of-15 from the free-throw line and connected on 16-of-44 field goal attempts for 36 percent.

“The girls played a great game. Our defense was really good. The girls did a good job of communicating on screens and had their hands up on the shooters,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Jerry Hulsing said.

Brenna Lanser tossed in 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds, made four steals and had three assists for the Hawks. Carson Fisk added 14 points and three steals. Mariah Vos scored 10 points.

“We did a good job of rebounding the ball,” Hulsing said. “We did a good job of attacking the rim and getting to the free-throw line and converting. I really proud how hard our kids played.”

Montezuma got 12 points from Riley Gatton and 10 points from Shelby Helm. The Bravettes are 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in SICL play.

Lynnville-Sully improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play. The Hawks travel to Colfax for a SICL game against Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday.

1A No. 5 Montezuma boys 48, 1A No. 4 Lynnvile-Sully boys 40

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s boys fell into a scoring freeze Friday night at home when the Class 1A No. 4 Hawks hosted the 1A No. 5 Montezuma Braves in South Iowa Cedar League conference play.

The Hawks shot a frigid 27 percent, 13-of-48, from the field and had single-digit scoring in the middle quarters. The Braves took full advantage to claim a 48-40 victory.

“It was a tough night for the Hawks. We played better defensively in the second half, but it wasn't quite enough,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We couldn't seem to get it going offensively.”

Montezuma held a 14-12 lead over Lynnville-Sully at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks could only muster six points in the second period, trailing 30-18 at the break.

The Braves held a 14-9 edge in the third quarter. Lynnville-Sully made a run — 13-4 — in the final eight minutes, but the comeback fell short.

It was the first loss of the season for the Hawks, who are 4-1 overall and 3-1 in SICL play. Montezuma is 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Tyler Van Zante scored 12 points for the Hawks and Tanner Foster added 11 points. Jesse Van Wyk controlled nine rebounds and Brevin Hansen had five steals.

Montezuma got 16 points from Logan Price and 15 points from Dakota Strong.

Lynnville-Sully plays Colfax-Mingo in SICL action Tuesday in Colfax.

Colfax-Mingo boys 52, BGM boys 42

COLFAX — Two starters return to the Colfax-Mingo boys basketball team's starting lineup Friday night, and both impacted the end result.

Junior Misha Seebeck scored 11 points and collected four steals, while junior Jarod Nichols returned from an ankle to score eight points and grab nine rebounds.

The Tigerhawks trailed 15-13 after one quarter and were down 29-24 before rallying in the second half. Colfax-Mingo led by one after three quarters and then shut down BGM in the fourth quarter to claim its second win of the season.

Junior Alex Lewis put in a game-high 12 points for Colfax-Mingo. He also had two steals and buried two 3-pointers. Nichols also made two 3-pointers in the game for the Tigerhawks, who improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in South Iowa Cedar League play.

Junior Jonathan Jacobs chipped in seven points and three steals, sophomore Reegan Van Dyke scored six points and grabbed nine boards and sophomore Zarek Hill dished out a team-high five assists in his return from injury.

The Tigerhawks hit 18-of-21 from the line and made six 3-pointers, while BGM connected on five 3-point shots but only made 11-of-18 from the line.

Price Hall led the Bears (1-4. 1-3) with 10 points, while Jayce Knight scored nine, Dylan Schafbach scored eight and Eric Weiss put in seven.

Colfax-Mingo girls 47, BGM girls 43

BROOKLYN — For the second time this season, the Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit to win a South Iowa Cedar League game.

The Tigerhawks trailed by six at halftime but outscored host BGM 35-25 in the second half during a 47-43 victory.

Colfax-Mingo got 14 points and five rebounds from junior McKeely Tjaden, and junior Ries Wilson added 11 points and five rebounds in her season debut. The two juniors combined to hit 7-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Colfax-Mingo hit 13-of-20 from the line in the game, while BGM connected on 8-of-18.

Five Tigerhawks scored at least six points. Sophomore Mackensie Brown scored eight points, senior Amy Russell put in seven points and grabbed six boards, while senior Dakota Hostetter collected six points and six boards.

Lyla Kriegel led BGM with 13 points, while Aimee Hochstetler added 12 in the loss.

Colfax-Mingo ended a two-game losing skid and improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the SICL. BGM lost its second straight game and dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

CMB girls 36, Gilbert girls 35

GILBERT — The Gilbert girls basketball team had defeated Collins-Maxwell/Baxter 13 straight times dating back to the 2009-10 season.

That streak came to an end Friday night when CMB traveled to Gilbert and handed the Tigers a 36-35 loss during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

Junior Brianda Bane buried four of the Raiders' eight 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 14 points. She also had five rebounds and collected three steals before fouling out.

Gilbert led 9-4 after one quarter, but CMB tied the game at halftime with a 14-9 advantage in the second quarter. CMB held Gilbert to three points in the third quarter and led by four with one frame to go. The Tigers outscored the Raiders in the fourth, but CMB held on for the one-point win.

Senior Emily Coughenour finished with five points, five assists and five rebounds in the win, while junior Sailor Hinegardner scored six points, drained two 3-pointers and finished with three steals. Senior Mikayla Eslinger scored four points and grabbed four rebounds.

Senior Kathleen Baldwin scored five points for the Raiders, who improved to 4-3 on the season. CMB won just two games last year.

The Raiders and Tigers (3-5) are now both 2-3 in HOIC play.

Gilbert, which lost for a third straight game, was led by Sarah Hinners' game-high 14 points and seven rebounds.

Gilbert boys 71, CMB boys 55

GILBERT — The CMB boys basketball team won the second half by two point against Gilbert during Heart of Iowa Conference action Friday night.

Unfortunately, it was only enough to carve into a double-digit deficit it faced at halftime.

Gilbert led by 20 at the break and cruised to an easy win over the Raiders, dropping CMB's overall record to 1-4 on the season. The Raiders are now 0-4 in conference play.

Sophomore Will Clapper collected a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Raiders, while senior Hunter McWhirter scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Travis Lindemoen finished with 11 points and four boards, but the Raiders committed 21 turnovers in the loss. Freshman Cole Damman also had eight points for the visitors.

Gilbert won its third straight and is now 3-1 in the HOIC. Its only loss came in the season opener against South Hamilton.
