Cardinal girls break losing skid with win over Bobcats

MARSHALLTOWN — Snapping a three-game losing streak, Newton High’s girls defeated host Marshalltown, 45-38, in a non-conference game on Thursday.

Cardinal guards Randi Walters and Ryanne Rausch led the way for Newton. Walters fired in 13 points, pulled seven rebounds, had two assists and made three steals. Rausch scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and had two assists.

The Cardinals owned a 7-4 lead after one quarter of play. They outscored the Bobcats 14-10 in the second period to hold a 21-14 halftime lead.

Marshalltown pushed Newton in the second half. The Cardinals maintained their lead on a 12-11 scoring edge in the third quarter then held off the Bobcats, who had a 13-12 run in the fourth quarter.

“We had a good effort tonight from our players,” Newton head coach Brandon Sharp said. “We are starting to get everyone on the same page. We had players grow in their roles.”

Ellie Horn controlled things inside the paint for Newton with 13 rebounds. She scored eight points and blocked two shots. Ali Bestell came off the bench to claim six rebounds for the Cardinals.

Taylor Shipley had four rebounds and three assists while Courtney Jacobsen dished out two assists.

“We’ll continue to keep taking steps forward. We’re working on getting better each day,” Sharp said.

Newton went 9-of-20 from the free-throw line while Marshalltown was 8-of-12.

Kassy Vest scored 14 points for the Bobcats. Erica Johnson added six points.

Newton won the freshman game, 33-24. Kameron Nehring paced the Cardinals with 16 points, six rebounds and four steals. Liv Whitten had six points followed by Molly Coy and Courtney Dawson with four points each. Malarie Zach added two points and Priscila Amador had one point.

There was no junior varsity game.

Newton (2-3) plays at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Class 4A 12th-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes.
