Optometrist returns as vision center owner

Local doctor owns vision center in Walmart

With 17 years of experience under her belt, a familiar face and optometrist has made her way back to Newton to take ownership of the vision center located within the Walmart Supercenter.

It’s not the first time Michelle Cazett, O.D. P.C., of Newton, has owned the center. From 1999 to 2004, Cazett owned the vision center before she transferred to the Marshalltown Walmart.

Since September when the lease became available, Cazett began to split her hours between the Newton and Marshalltown location, which she also owns.

“It has been a really exciting year,” Cazett said. “It’s really great to work closer to home.”

Cazett grew up in Pocahontas and then moved to Chicago to attend the Illinois College of Optometry and she moved to Newton in 1999 for the job opportunity.

She has three children, Cole, 16, Brody, 13, and Brynn, 12, who are all very active in sports. In her spare time, Cazett raises her English bulldogs.

Cazett said she is enjoying getting to know her co-workers and the other doctor who works in the Newton office, Jill Eggers, of State Center.

“What sets us apart, despite the stigma people might have about working at Walmart, is that we get to help people who may not be able to afford to go other places,” Cazett said. “I’m proud that I can help people afford quality eye care.”

Cazett also said most insurance providers are accepted at the center, and if any issues come up with your eyes, it’s best to address them as soon as possible.

Cazett said a few things she hopes her patients remember is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, such as being active and not smoking.

“General health can help you take better care of your eyes,” Cazett said.

Throughout Cazett’s career, one thing has been made clear — when you enjoy what you do, you look forward to coming to work every day.

“I’m really grateful, I enjoy my patients,” Cazett said. “It’s really fulfilling.”

The eye center is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Walk-ins are welcome.
