NHS 9th girls lose opener

TAMA — Newton High’s freshman girls had a good beginning to their first year of high school basketball. The Cardinals lost 34-30 to host South Tama Monday.

“We had a lot of positives in the game. We will learn and correct our mistakes we had,” Cardinal freshman head coach Eric Vander Velden said. “We came out strong in the first four minutes of the game, and South Tama finished the game on a 12-0 run in the final six minutes.”

Newton built a 14-9 advantage by the end of the first quarter and was up 19-15 at halftime. The Cardinals continued to lead the Trojans after three quarters, 28-22.

The Cardinals were up 30-22 when the Trojans turned the tide at the end.

Kameron Nehrin had a double-double in her opening high school contest with 17 points and 12 steals. Malarie Zach tossed in nine points. Scoring two points each were Liv Whitten and Jenna Smith.

Newton shot 25 percent, 14-of-55, from the field and went 1-of-2 at the free-throw line.

The Cardinals had 27 rebounds led by Whitten with seven followed by Zach and Smith with five rebounds each. Whitten dished out three assists.

Newton’s next game is Dec. 2 at Indianola.
