Lynnville-Sully opens with big win at home

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks used a 19-4 run in the second quarter to gain control of the 2016-17 season opener Friday night against Iowa Valley. The Hawks treated the hometown fans to a 51-28 victory.

“The girls really played well on the defensive end. I was real happy how we communicated and got through screens, forcing Iowa Valley to shoot from outside with a hand in their face,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Jerry Hulsing said.

Lynnville-Sully led Iowa Valley by three points, 11-8, after one quarter.

The Hawk girls stretched their 30-12 halftime lead with a 9-6 scoring surge in the third quarter.

The Hawks’ defense held the Tigers to 18 percent shooting, 10-of-53, from field goal range. Lynnville-Sully shot 31 percent, 20-of-63, from the field. Both teams hit seven free throws.

Lynnville-Sully held a 59-35 advantage in rebounding over Iowa Valley. The Hawks scored 20 second-chance points to the Tigers’ five second-chance points. Each team made 10 steals, but the Hawks converted for 11 points off 17 Tiger turnovers while the Tigers only got two points off the Hawks’ 18 turnovers.

“On offense, we did a pretty good job of moving the ball and finding the open girls. We missed a couple opportunities, but overall, it was a good start. I thought we did a good job of rebounding,” Hulsing said.

Senior Brenna Lanser and sophomore Carson Fisk each recorded a double-double on the first night of the season. Lanser scored 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.

Fisk tossed in 10 points and had 12 rebounds. Each of them had three steals and Fisk dished out four assists.

Cherisse Ward led the Tigers with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Andrea Healey had 11 rebounds and seven points.

Lynnville-Sully (1-0) is off until it hosts BGM on Nov. 29 in Sully.
