Newton High’s girls open the 2016-17 basketball season at home this weekend. The Cardinals host the Newton Cardinal 2016 Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, North Polk takes on Carlisle at 5 p.m. to open the four-team tournament. Newton plays Bondurant-Farrar at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, the winners of Friday’s games play in the championship game at 3 p.m. The losing teams in Friday’s games play in a 1 p.m. consolation game.
At 5 p.m. Saturday the all-tournament team will be announced followed by a 3-point shooting contest. Each team has two participants in the 3-point contest.
Newton took second in the 2015 tournament, which was decided a month after the first-round games. Winter weather moved the first round to Saturday then Carlisle returned to Newton to play for the title, beating the Cardinals 70-58.
Medals will be awarded to the championship team and to the all-tournament team members.
Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
