Supervisors approve tax levies, credits

A list of tax levies and tax credit applications were considered Tuesday by the Jasper County Board of Supervisors. The board passed all motions before them in the areas of 2015 payable 2016/2017 tax levies, 2015 homestead tax credit applications, 2015 military service tax credit applications and 2015 family farm tax credit applications.

“The tax rate summary sheets show all of the different levy authorities, like each city. It shows the total of what they have levied, how was the county levy, the assessor, school and township,” deputy auditor Teresa Arrowood said.

Also among the approvals were a list of exemptions and applications that are partially refunded by the state of Iowa. The county showed the total value of exemptions in areas of homestead, military and family farm along with the amount the state gives back in reimbursement.

“If you own a property you can file for an exemption, or tax credit, that is taken off, depending on how much your house is valued,” Arrowood said. “The same is true for the military and family farm exemptions and applications.”

• The 2015 payable 2016/2017 homestead exemptions in the value of $42,894,611 have a total reimbursement of $1,583,231 from the state of Iowa.

• The 2015 payable 2016/2017 military service exemptions in the value of $3,500,991 have a total reimbursement of $24,234 from the state of Iowa.

• The 2015 payable 2016/2017 family farm tax credit applications with a value of $113,946, 311 have a total reimbursement of $102,695 from the state of Iowa.

The board also disallowed several homestead and military tax credit applications in the county.

“They were disallowed because either they sold the property and they are living somewhere else or maybe they own the property still but bought another property and live there,” Arrowood said. “You cannot get a credit on more than one property and it is where you receive your mail.”

In other business:

• The board approved the use of the courthouse for the 4-H Festival of Trees from Nov. 21 through Dec. 27.

• The Newton Area Chamber of Commerce was approved to use the courthouse lawn for holiday festivities on Nov. 25.
