Newton Police Department

Derek L. Gladson, 28, of Newton, was arrested at 6:34 p.m. Oct. 21 after turning himself in at the Newton Police Department on a Mahaska County warrant for probation violation.

• Austin B. Shepard, 19, of Newton, was charged for possession of drug paraphernalia at 11 p.m. Monday after an officer responded to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. Shepard told police he stole several items and put them in his backpack. The total value of items was $60.15. Shepard also told police he had drug paraphernalia inside his backpack. Police found a plastic container containing an eye glasses case with a syringe and cotton swabs. Inside a separate plastic container was a rubber strap used to restrict blood-flow while using a syringe. Shepard said he uses methamphetamine.

Shannon K. Dantzler, 29, of Orangeburg, S.C., is charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, possession of drug paraphernalia and littering after officers were called to Sunset Park in reference to a person painting graffiti on the retaining wall just before 6 a.m. Tuesday. Dantzler painted "Meth is Deth." She told police she was trying to spread a message of love and good faith for the children. Inside of Dantzler's backpack were a syringe and a container with marijuana residue.

• Messenda A. Swan, 31, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 11:41 p.m. Tuesday after a Walmart employee told police a women concealed several items and then went into the women’s restroom. She denied stealing the items, and she told police she accidentally took Gobstoppers candy into the bathroom and forgot them there. She admitted to stealing as she didn’t have money and she was hungry. The items were mouthwash, candy, tattoo goo, frozen meals and skin care products totaling to $31.49.

• Joseph P. Ward, 41, of Des Moines, was arrested at 10:57 a.m. Tuesday at 413 W. Eighth St. S. on a Polk County warrant for parole violation.
