NCMP takes third in NCIC swim meet

WATERLOO — In one of the closest races in Saturday’s 2016 North Central Iowa Swimming Conference involved three of the top 15 ranked swimmers in the 100-yard breaststroke. A fraction of a second separated the three as they touched the wall in the race.

NCMP sophomore Lindsey Blommers, who has the fifth fastest time in the state, was edged by 13th-ranked Decorah freshman Emma Bachelder. Boone’s Erin Kokemiller, who is ranked 14th, placed third. Their times — 1 minute, 8.72 seconds, 1:08.79 and 1:08.89, respectively.

NCMP’s Aquagirls relinquished their four-time NCIC team title, placing third with 229 points. Decorah claimed the conference championship with 430 points, just ahead of Boone with 424 points.

Grinnell was fourth with 101 points followed by meet host Vinton-Shellsburg/Union with 82 points, Oskaloosa with 74 points and Williamsburg with 30 points. The conference meet was held at the Central Middle School pool in Waterloo.

“It was a solid meet for NCMP. We were missing three swimmers and mixed up the lineup before our regional meet,” NCMP head coach Sarah Patterson said. “The taper people swam well, and the ones not tapering swam as to be expected. They were a little rough, but with rest this week, we’ll be ready on Saturday.”

NCMP heads to a regional swim meet at noon on Saturday hosted by Southeast Polk in Pleasant Hill.

The Aquagirls made the podium in seven of the 12 events, placing in the top six places.

NCMP opened the conference meet with a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay race. The team of Lakin Jenkins, Blommers, Emily Miller and Sarah Prendergast posted a time of 1:58, out-touching Decorah, 1:58.06.

Midway through the meet, the foursome of Blommers, Jaclyn Michener, Jessica Zahn and Jenkins placed third in the 200 freestyle relay. The four combined for a time of 1:50.59.

Blommers was on the podium in the 200 individual medley, taking fourth in 2:29.21, and later for the breaststroke. Miller earned fourth place in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.47.

Prendergast claimed fourth in the 50 freestyle in 27.32 seconds. Zahn placed sixth in the 100 freestyle in 1:01.22.

“Freshman Abbie Hill had an outstanding meet, bettering her personal best in the 200 freestyle and swimming fat on her relay legs,” Patterson said. “Morgan Altman had a best time in the 500 freestyle.”

Patterson said Kaitlyn Barnes had a personal-best time of 7:06.99 in the 500 freestyle and Molly Coy had a personal-best time of 1;22.63 in the 100 backstroke.

“We are now looking forward to a fast regional meet this Saturday at Southeast Polk,” Patterson said.
