Valley 59, Newton 6
WEST DES MOINES — Junior quarterback Garrett Sturtz guided the Newton High Cardinals on an 85-yard scoring drive against Class 4A top-ranked West Des Moines Valley’s Tiger Friday night. Sturtz completed two passes in the drive, but it was a 51-yard run by Sturtz which set up the touchdown.
Sturtz found senior running back Reese Rosenquist in the end zone on a nine-yard scoring pass. The extra-point kick was blocked by the Tigers. Jevon Mason returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for Valley to push the Tigers’ lead to 38-6 with 56 seconds left in the second quarter.
“They are very good,” Newton head coach Ed Ergenbright said after the Cardinals lost 59-6 Friday night at Valley Stadium. “I’m very proud of how our guys competed right to the end. You have to play error-free football against a team like Valley, and we didn’t early.”
Valley kept Newton’s offense bottled up in the first half. The Tigers had short fields to work with offensively, scoring 21 points in the first quarter and led Newton 31-0 before the Cardinals scored.
Newton’s Jaron Roush intercepted a pass by Valley’s quarterback Will Rodruck, who started in place of senior Rocky Lombardi, on the first play of the second quarter. Lombardi was sidelined with an injury.

The remainder of the game was played under a running clock.
