Tigerhawks sweep BGM, stay unbeaten in SICL

BROOKLYN — Colfax-Mingo’s volleyball team edged BGM in the first set of their South Iowa Cedar League match on Monday night. The next two sets weren’t as close.

The Tigerhawks remained unbeaten in the SICL with a three-game sweep of the Bears, winning 25-23, 25-14, 25-21. Colfax-Mingo improved to 5-0 in conference play.

The victory clinches a berth in the SICL’s “Gold Quad” tournament, which takes place Oct. 13 at Iowa Valley. The other three schools who will battle for the SICL title include Iowa Valley, Montezuma and Belle Plaine. Colfax-Mingo begins the night against Belle Plaine at 5:30 p.m.

Junior Ries Wilson finished with 21 kills and eight digs in the win, while senior Amy Russell added 11 kills, nine digs and four aces. Colfax-Mingo has won four straight matches and five of its last six to improve to 10-4 on the season. That is one more win than the Tigerhawks had last season.

Wilson now has 187 kills this season, 111 of which have come in SICL play. Russell is up to 92 kills and 28 aces.

Junior Megan Earles tallied 30 assists and now has 158 helpers in SICL play and 270 assists overall.

Sophomore Chelsea Russell collected seven digs and four aces, while senior Dakota Hostetter totaled three kills.

The Tigerhawks play Saturday morning in the Madrid Invitational and return to SICL play at 7 p.m. Monday at home against English Valleys.
