Tigerhawks take third in ACGC volleyball tourney

GUTHRIE CENTER — The Colfax-Mingo volleyball team continues to march toward a winning record for the season. A year after winning just nine games, the Tigerhawks won their eighth match of the season Saturday during a 3-2 day at the ACGC (Adair-Casey-Guthrie Center) Tournament.

Colfax-Mingo started and ended the tournament with matches against host ACGC. The Tigerhawks lost the opener in straight sets but came back to defeat the Chargers in the third-place match. Last year, Colfax-Mingo went 0-4 at this same tournament.

Between the matches against ACGC (8-8), the Tigerhawks swept Coon Rapids-Bayard and Glidden-Ralston and were swept by Audubon.

The third-place finish netted junior Ries Wilson all-tournament recognition.

In the 21-13, 21-17 opening loss to ACGC, Wilson finished with seven kills and eight digs, junior Megan Earles had 13 assists and the team was 28-of-30 in serves with four aces.

Senior Amy Russell chipped in five kills, sophomore Chelsea Russell had six digs and junior Rhiannon Haley was 7-of-8 in serves with two aces.

The Tigerhawks defeated Coon Rapids-Bayard 21-13, 21-17. In that win, Wilson finished with five kills and six digs, while Earles had two kills and eight assists and four digs. Senior Dakota Hostetter also had four digs.

Audubon (11-4) defeated Colfax-Mingo 21-17, 23-21. The Wheelers went 4-1 on the day with the only loss coming to Underwood in the championship match.

Against Audubon, Wilson had 11 of the team’s 14 kills and tallied 12 digs for the double-double. Earles finished with 10 assists, Amy Russell had nine digs, two aces and was 10-of-12 in serves, while Chelsea Russell collected seven digs.

As a team, Colfax-Mingo was 36-of-39 in serves with four aces.

Wilson finished with 13 kills and seven digs in the 21-12, 21-15 win over Glidden-Ralston. Amy Russell added four kills and six digs and Earles tallied 16 assists.

Earles was 10-of-11 in serves with one ace, Haley finished 9-of-10 in serves with one and the Tigerhawks served up seven aces in all.

In the 21-18, 12-21, 15-11 win over ACGC, Wilson tallied eight kills and 13 digs, Amy Russell finished with a team-high nine kills and Hostetter chipped in five kills and eight digs. Earles collected 12 assists and two aces.

The Tigerhawks try to stay unbeaten in South Iowa Cedar League play at 6:30 p.m. Monday when they travel to Victor to face HLV.

Colfax-Mingo is 3-0 in the SICL.
