Newton JV volleyball takes second in own tournament

Opening the 2016 season at home Thursday were Newton High’s junior varsity volleyball team and the freshman volleyball team in tournaments.

The Cardinal junior varsity team went 2-1-1 for second place to Ames in its tournament. Gilbert was third followed by Knoxville in fourth and Saydel in fifth.

Newton defeated Saydel 21-12, 21-19 and Gilbert 21-16, 21-16. The Cardinals split with Ames, winning 21-19 and losing 21-7. Knoxville beat Newton 21-5, 21-12.

“The junior varsity girls played a lot better as the night went on — communication, staying aggressive and being ready,” Newton junior varsity coach Kristina McNew said. “We will take away the negatives and focus on those at practice to get us ready for conference play next week.”

No information was available on the Cardinal freshman team’s matches on Thursday.

Newton opens Little Hawkeye Conference play Tuesday at home against Indianola. The junior varsity match is at 5:30 p.m. in the NHS Upper Gym and the freshman match is at 5:30 p.m. in the NHS Lower Gym. The varsity match is at 7:30 p.m. in the Upper Gym.
