Educational series focuses on antibiotics

In an effort to assist the livestock industry in preparing for the FDA’s expanded veterinary feed directive, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation has partnered with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association to offer regional educational sessions around the state.

The educational series runs from Aug. 22 through Sept. 1 with regional sessions in 11 locations. The program will help answer questions from all individuals impacted by the expanded rules, including veterinarians, livestock producers and feed industry personnel.

Two examples of changes under the expanded set of rules are a new requirement for a veterinarian’s written statement for antibiotic use in livestock feed along with water-based antibiotics requiring a prescription.

There is no fee to attend the meetings, but preregistration is encouraged.

The meeting that will be the closest to Jasper County will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 1 at Carpenters Hall in Chariton. Attendees are asked to RSVP to the Lucas County Extension Office by calling 641-774-2016.

For more general information, call 712-250-0070, email to caclark@iastate.edu or contact a regional Iowa State Extension livestock specialist.
