Three people injured by dog attacks near Valeria

Woman walking dogs accosted by at-large dogs, police say

Three people suffered injuries while trying to break up a fight among dogs Saturday morning and two of those people were seriously injured.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and EMS responded to a call for medical assistance Saturday morning in western Jasper County, and ended up treating three people for dog attack injuries.

At about 9:30 a.m. medical assistance was requested for the 14000 block of Fame Ave, in rural western Jasper County, near Valeria. Colfax and Mingo Fire and EMS, along with sheriff’s deputies, determined a man and a male juvenile had been injured by dogs.

While responding to this call, the sheriff’s dispatch center received an additional call of a woman who had suffered injuries from dogs.

The preliminary investigation indicates the woman was walking several dogs in the residential area along Fame Avenue. Several dogs from another residence were running at large and attacked her dogs.

The man was the owner of these dogs. He attempted to intervene, and they were both injured as they tried separate the dogs.

Another local resident heard the incident and helped get the woman to safety.

The adults both suffered dog bites and other injuries which were described as serious. All three patients were transported to Des Moines-area hospitals for treatment, but their conditions were not known at press time Monday. None of the identities of the attack victims were disclosed.

The juvenile male was injured when he attempted to restrain the dogs. He did not suffer any animal bites but had minor injuries.

Two dogs died during the incident as a result of injuries from other dogs. A third dog was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.

Four dogs were taken into custody for quarantine by the Jasper County Animal Rescue League.

Fame Avenue runs through a residential neighborhood northwest of Valeria and southwest of Mingo.

The sheriff’s office did not announce any charges but is continuing to investigate this incident.
