Newton draws Pella in 3A district opener

Newton High’s Cardinal baseball team opens the postseason against a familiar foe.

The Cardinals (9-17) drew fifth-ranked Pella (23-8) in Class 3A District 12 tournament play. Pella hosts the district tournament July 15 and July 18.

Knoxville (17-14) plays Chariton (13-15) at 5 p.m. July 15 in the first game of a District 12 doubleheader at Pella. Newton takes on Pella at 7 p.m. The winners play in the district title game at 7 p.m. July 18.

Newton was assigned to Class 3A Substate 6, which consists of District 12 and District 11. The two district champions play for the substate championship and a 3A state tournament berth at 7 p.m. July 20 at Pella.

There are four Little Hawkeye Conference teams in Substate 6. Oskaloosa hosts the District 11 tournament July 15 and July 18.

Oskaloosa (21-10) plays Grinnell (8-21) — both out of the LHC — in the opening round. Williamsburg (23-13) plays South Tama (5-24).

Newton went 1-2 against Pella in LHC play, beating the Little Dutch 5-1 on June 29. The Cardinals lost 3-1 and 6-1 to Pella on June 13.

Newton was 2-1 against Grinnell and 0-3 against Oskaloosa in the regular season.

The Cardinals close out the regular season next week which includes home games against Knoxville on Monday and against South Tama on Wednesday.
