PCM softball upsets Class 3A No. 15 Saydel

MONROE — In a potential Class 3A regional semifinal matchup, the Prairie City-Monroe softball team got the upper hand against Saydel on Monday night.

The Mustangs lost a 2-0 lead in the seventh but recorded a walk-off win over the Class 3A No. 15 Eagles. PCM won the Heart of Iowa Conference game, 3-2, in eight innings.

The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the third inning before plating the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Brooke Nicholson and Abby Waddell each had two hits for the Mustangs, who finished with six hits and drew four walks in the game. Waddell had two RBIs and scored a run, while Nicholson doubled twice, scored a run and walked once.

Jayci Vos and Camryn Wignall each had one hit, while Katie Vande Wall, Courtney Bridges and Jaiden Rogers all walked once.

Kayla Jennings threw into the seventh inning but was pulled after Saydel (19-9 overall, 10-3 in the HOIC) tied the game in the seventh. Jennings allowed two unearned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four.

Chelbie Gillespie earned the win in the circle. She got the Mustangs out of the jam in the seventh and then did not allow a run in the eighth. Gillespie walked just one batter and struck out four in her two innings of work.

PCM (10-15, 5-7) plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Knoxville.
