PCM loses to Saydel, Eagles claim HOIC title

PRAIRIE CITY — The Prairie City-Monroe baseball team was held to just two hits at the plate, and the Mustang defense committed five errors during a 14-0, five-inning loss to Class 3A No. 5 Saydel on Monday during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

The Eagles scored three runs in the first, eight in the second and three more in the third. Saydel (21-4) improved to 13-0 in the HOIC and wrapped up the conference title with the victory.

Clay Cooper and Austin Brown had the Mustangs’ only two hits. Tyler Foster, Braden Phifer, Noah Clark and Ryan Hill and Brayton Van Dyke all had one walk each.

On the flip side, Brown and freshman Preston Van Wyk issued 10 walks to the Eagles. Brown started on the mound and took the loss after allowing 11 runs — three earned — on six hits with four walks in 1 2/3 innings. He is now 5-2 on the season.

Van Wyk tossed the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with six walks and four strikeouts.

PCM (8-15, 6-8) steps outside the HOIC at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Clarke in Prairie City.
