The Hometown Rewards Energy Fair organizers have announced the winners from the Hometown Rewards Energy Fair May 26 and the Newton Public Library.

The Elementary Challenge energy saving competition winners were:

First Place — Hunter Kennedy, sixth grade, Project: “Drink Rain”

Second Place — Brody Bauer and Alex Thomason, fifth grade, Project: “Solar Motorcycle”

Third Place — Nikelle Birech, second grade, Project: “American Cabin”

Three people also won energy saving door prizes:

Candice Bogan — Samsung Smart Things Home Monitoring Kit

Avery Oman — Honeywell Wi-Fi touch screen thermostat

Kari Kennedy — $500 LED replacement package

Lastly, as part of Newton's participation in Hometown Rewards, you voted to build a solar pergola at the Newton Arboretum in cooperation with Project AWAKE. Once the city achieves its energy saving goals, Alliant Energy will give the community $30,000 toward this project. Organizers plan on starting this project next summer and it should be an area attraction for residents and visitors alike.
