MARENGO — Lynnville-Sully’s baseball and softball teams are staying in the thick of the South Iowa Cedar League conference races.

After dropping their season and conference opener, the Hawk girls have won seven straight in SICL play. Their seventh conference win came on the road Monday against host Iowa Valley. The Hawks won 4-1.

The Lynnville-Sully softball team is 7-1 in SICL action, sitting in second place behind Colfax-Mingo, which is 8-2.

Also in second place is Lynville-Sully’s baseball team following a 7-4 decision Monday over host Iowa Valley. The Hawk boys took an extra inning to win as the teams were locked in a 3-3 tie after seven innings.

“There was a three-way tie for first place in the SICL baseball race and two of those teams were Iowa Valley and us,” Lynnville-Sully baseball head coach Bob Scandridge said. “This was a big win for the kids and our baseball program.”

Lynnville-Sully trailed Iowa Valley 2-1 through five innings. Carson Dunsbergen started a two-out rally with a double in the sixth inning. Carson Dunsbergen moved to third on a balk and scored the tying run on a passed ball.

The Hawks took the lead when Dylan Rozenboom singled, stole second and came home on a base hit by Kobe Fisk. The Tigers scratched back in their half of the sixth to plate the tying run, for a 3-3 deadlock.

Scandridge said the Hawks loaded the bases in the seventh but failed to score. Not so in the eighth as the Hawks took advantage of two hit batters and a Tiger error combining with three hits to push four runs across.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, a walk and two singles produced a run for the Tigers. Relief pitcher Tyler Van Zante picked up the save by striking out the next batter. Josh Dunsbergen got the pitching win for Lynnville-Sully, going seven innings allowing three runs on six hits, two walks and four hit batters. He struck out five batters.

“Josh showed a lot of toughness tonight by battling through some tough situations,” Scandridge said. “After he got through some bumpy early innings, he settled down and threw a very smart game.”

Caden Dunsbergen led the Hawks at the plate with three singles. Rozenboom, Van Zante and Ross Van Wyk each had two singles. Carson Dunsbergen doubled. Hitting a single each were Fisk, Kyle Van Dyke and Elijah Collins.

The Hawk baseball team is 8-1 in SICL play and 9-4 overall.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball team (10-8) scored single runs in the first and second and led Iowa Valley, 2-1 though four innings. The Hawks tallied two more runs in the fifth for the final margin, 4-1.

Carson Fisk threw a two-hiiter for the Hawk girls. She issued one walk and struck out five.

Brenna Lanser singled and doubled while Kristen Van Der Wilt hit two singles. Hitting a single each were Kasiah Ehresman, Mallory Loftuts, Makenzy Rozendaal and Shelby Foster.

Lynnville-Sully’s teams travel to State Center Tuesday for non-conference games against West Marshall. Game time for both softball and baseball is 5 p.m.
