Hawk baseball wins, loses at home

SULLY — Coming off a battering by visiting Pella Christian — 16-3 in five innings — on Thursday, Lynnville-Sully’s baseball Hawks stretched its South Iowa Cedar League mark to 7-1 Friday night. They pushed past visiting Keota, 7-3.

After two innings Friday, Lynnville-Sully and Keota were deadlocked at 2-all. The Hawks took the lead for good on a two-run third inning. Keota scored its final run of the contest in the fourth to make it 4-3.

The Hawks added run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

“The highlight of the game was we did not have one strikeout by our hitters in the game,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Bob Scandridge said. “That is proof when you plug the ball in play, good things will happen. The kids are playing very well, and are coming together as a team.”

Lynnville-Sully starter Tyler Van Zante pitched four innings, allowing three runs on two hits and six walks. He struck out five in his win. Elijah Collins threw three innings of scoreless baseball for the save, issuing four walks and striking out two.

Collins delivered a single and a double offensively for the Hawks. Hitting a single apiece were Caden Dunsbergen, Van Zante, Dylan Rozenboom, Kyle Van Dyke, Ross Van Wyk and Noah Engle.

At home Thursday, the Hawks found themselves behind 4-0 against Pella Christian after two innings. Pella Christian broke open the contest with a seven-run third. It added a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth for a 16-0 lead.

Lynnville-Sully scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the rally fell short and the game ended by run rule.

Collins had two singles and an RBI while Carson Dunsbergen doubled. Engle, Caden Dunsbergen and Van Wyk each had a base hit.

Josh Dunsbergen, Rylan James, Evan Squires and Engle pitched for Lynnville-Sully. The Hawk pitchers allowed 11 hits and issued 11 walks.

On Monday, Lynnville-Sully (8-4) plays at 5 p.m. against Iowa Valley in Marengo in SICL action. The Hawks play at West Marshall in non-conference action Tuesday.
