Mustang baseball loses to Class 3A No. 8 Saydel

DES MOINES — Prairie City-Monroe’s baseball team took an early lead against Class 3A No. 8 Saydel on Monday night.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Eagles plated five runs in the second and never looked back during a 7-1 home triumph over the Mustangs during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

PCM was held to only two hits in the game. Senior Clay Cooper doubled and scored the Mustangs’ only run, while junior Noah Clark had the other hit as well as an RBI and a stolen base. Freshman Brayton Van Dyke walked and stole a base.

Sophomore Noah Henkenius fell to 1-3 on the season on the mound. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out two and walked three in 3 2/3 innings. Junior Braden Phifer tossed the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed no earned runs and two hits while fanning two and walking none.

Saydel improved to 8-0 on the season.

The Eagles have claimed six 10-run rule wins this season and are outscoring their opponents 102-9.

PCM (4-6 overall and 3-3 in the HOIC) tries to end a four-game losing streak at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
