Newton Police Department

• A 17-year-old juvenile is charged with distributing to a minor after authorities were called at 11:54 a.m. May 19 to the 700 block of North Fourth Avenue East. Officers were called to Basics and Beyond for a student who was potentially under the influence of drugs. Officers spoke with the student who said he was not on pills but had dilated pupils, slurred speech and had a hard time communicating. Officers asked the student about receiving a pill earlier in the day and he said he did and still had it. Another student had witnessed the first student receive the pill from the juvenile. Officers spoke with the juvenile, who denied having any pills. Later, officers were informed about another student who had been approached by the juvenile to purchase the pills. They also received a photo screen shot of a status the juvenile put on Facebook stating he gave someone the pill and that he has 12 with him. He was cited and released to appear.

• Martin Rendon Gutierrez, 47, of Britt, is charged with operating while under the influence after authorities pulled him over at 1:31 p.m. May 23 in the 1700 block of First Avenue East. Officers made contact with Gutierrez and saw he had blood shot, watery eyes and was lethargic. He denied consuming any alcohol but failed several field sobriety tests. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• A 15-year-old juvenile is charged with third-degree theft after authorities were called at 11:30 a.m. Friday to Pit Stop Liquors. Officers were called about the theft of a phone and met with the victim who said the juvenile asked to borrow his phone to make a call. Once the juvenile received the phone he took off running. The victim ran after him but was unable to catch him. The juvenile was later located at his home and admitted to taking the phone. He was cited and released to appear.

• Therron E. Smith, 27, of Newton, is charged with consumption/intoxication in public places and simple misdemeanor interference with official acts after authorities were called at 2:29 a.m. Saturday to 1022 E. 12th St. N. Officers were called about an intoxicated man who was slamming doors and yelling. They found Smith who was standing in a hallway staring at a door. He claimed his dog kept making its way to the apartment because the person inside broke into his apartment earlier. He said his dog refused to get up so he could not go back to his apartment. Officers attempted to move the dog and it immediately went with them. Smith was allowed to go back to his apartment. Less than five minutes later, he was out again and after seeing the officer attempted to go back to his apartment. He attempted to push the door shut and refused to put his hands behind his back to be handcuffed. He had bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Cody A. Rodenborn, 27, of Newton, is charged with possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities were called at 5:56 p.m. Saturday to 300 S. Eighth Ave. W. Officers saw Rodenborn walking and knew he had a warrant for his arrest. When searching him, they found a bag of methamphetamine and a syringe. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• A 14-year-old juvenile is charged with assault causing bodily injury or mental illness after authorities were called at 9 p.m. Saturday to the 100 block of North 13th Avenue West. Officers were called about an assault and spoke with the victim who said the juvenile jumped on her back causing her to fall down because she needed her phone back. He then slapped her arm causing bleeding and took her phone back. He was taken to a juvenile shelter.

• Ahmed M. Zakaria, 29, of Newton, is charged with domestic abuse assault after authorities were called at 2:28 a.m. Monday to the 100 block of East Eighth Street North. Officers were called about a domestic disturbance and were told about an argument that led to Zakaria grabbing the victim by the neck. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Mark D. Gardner, 53, of Newton, is charged with domestic abuse assault after authorities were called at 1:28 p.m. Monday to the 1200 block of First Avenue East. Officers were called about woman outside bleeding. They spoke with the victim who had blood on her face and shirt, bruising around her eye, a cut on her forehead, a bloody lip and injuries to her hand and foot. She smelled of alcohol and said she had been fighting with Gardner. She said Gardner had hit her and was taken to Skiff Medical Center for treatment. Gardner was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Benjamin J. Grulke, 30, of Prairie City, is charged with public intoxication and domestic abuse assault after authorities were called at 12:15 p.m. Sunday to Rock Creek West Park. Officers were called about an argument. They found Grulke who smelled of alcohol. The victim told officers that Grulke grabbed her arm and kicked her in the ribs. Then he took a torn up T-shirt and wrapped it around her neck. Officers found the shirt at the scene. The victim had bruising on her arms. He had a BAC of .124. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Tina R. Wright, 39, of West Des Moines, is charged with public intoxication, possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities were called at 12:15 p.m. Sunday to Rock Creek West Park. Officers were called about an argument. They found Wright who smelled of alcohol. Officers found rolling papers and marijuana in a vehicle along with a pipe on Wright. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Nathan J. Thompson, 31, of Milo, is charged with violation of no contact/protective order after authorities were called at 9:23 a.m. to the 300 block of South Madison Street in Prairie City. Thompson is accused of sending two texts to the victim who has a no contact order against him. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
